A sequel to the 1997 comedy My Best Friend\u2019s Wedding is in the works with Celine Song tapped to write the screenplay.<\/p>\n
According to Collider<\/a>, the playwright turned writer-director, who broke out with the Oscar-nominated drama Past Lives<\/a>, has reportedly been hired by Sony as the film enters early development.<\/p>\n News of the film recently circulated<\/a> when one of its stars, Dermot Mulroney, teased<\/a> that there is \u201ctalk of a sequel\u201d and that \u201clawyers were talking\u201d while promoting the Netflix drama series The Hunting Wives.<\/p>\n The original film starred Julia Roberts<\/a> as a meddling food critic who decides to break up her best friend\u2019s wedding because of her feelings for him. It also starred Cameron Diaz<\/a> and Rupert Everett and made just under $300m at the global box office.<\/p>\n Roberts has previously expressed<\/a> interest in reprising the role. The actor was last seen on the big screen in the romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise<\/a> and this year will lead Luca Guadagnino\u2019s provocative thriller After the Hunt. She will then be seen in the paranoid thriller Panic Carefully with Elizabeth Olsen.<\/p>\n Song scored a best original screenplay Oscar nomination for Past Lives and recently followed it up with Materialists<\/a>, a romantic comedy drama starring Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. The Guardian\u2019s Adrian Horton called<\/a> it \u201cas beguiling as it is frustrating\u201d in a three-star review.<\/p>\n She has also been attached<\/a> to a HBO series about the world of e-sports.<\/p>\n The sequel joins a number of other follow-ups to films from the 1990s.
