The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\nThe witness who recorded the scene told CBS New York that he saw at least five people come out of the manhole, although only the final three were captured on his recording.<\/p>\n
Police are looking for the three people seen in the Aug. 18 video.<\/p>\n
The NYPD has not said the latest group is connected to the people involved in the previous sewer incidents.<\/p>\n
Something Of Value<\/p>\n
Those earlier cases have given detectives considerably more information about what may be happening underground.<\/p>\n
Detectives told ABC7 that they have identified or caught up with men involved in previous incidents and believe many of the scavengers are migrants searching the sewer system for anything valuable.<\/p>\n
Investigators said they learned about a scavenging culture in places including Venezuela while looking into the cases.<\/p>\n
People identified in some of the previous incidents were charged with low-level offenses that were later dismissed as first-time offenses, while prosecutors declined to pursue other cases, detectives told the station.<\/p>\n
That history also gives police more than a theory based on unusual-looking videos.<\/p>\n
Similar sightings were reported in Brooklyn earlier this year. In one May incident, seven people entered the sewer system near McDonald Avenue and Colin Place in Gravesend at about 11 p.m. and emerged roughly three hours later.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere in Brooklyn that same night, police said eight people entered near Heyward Street and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg shortly after 1 a.m. They resurfaced several hours later and left in a vehicle.<\/p>\n
A Look Inside<\/p>\n
Police did not simply watch the videos and wonder where everyone had gone.<\/p>\n
After the earlier incidents, the NYPD sent Emergency Services Unit officers into the sewer system to determine whether anything dangerous had been left behind.<\/p>\n
Nothing nefarious was found, according to an NYPD statement reported by The Guardian.<\/p>\n
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection also inspected the system and found no damage to sewer equipment.<\/p>\n
Inspections following the more recent incidents similarly found no threat to the infrastructure, according to ABC7.<\/p>\n
The lack of damage does not make an unauthorized sewer expedition legal, or particularly advisable.<\/p>\n
City officials warn that entering the sewer system is illegal and extremely dangerous. Potential hazards include deadly gases, unstable surfaces, confined spaces, and sudden flooding.<\/p>\n
Three Brothers<\/p>\n
The newest video left viewers with considerably less information than they wanted and more than enough material to work with.<\/p>\n
One commenter settled on an explanation involving a familiar pair of underground plumbers and an unexpected addition to the family.<\/p>\n
“It’s Mario, Luigi, and their other lesser known brother Todd.”<\/p>\n
Another focused on the technique displayed by the final person emerging through the opening.<\/p>\n
“The way that last guy got out, that was 100% not his first time.”<\/p>\n
And with people apparently willing to spend hours searching beneath New York City streets for something valuable, another viewer found a more economic explanation.<\/p>\n
“The rent above ground is too damn high!”<\/p>\n
For the three people recorded near Penn Station on Aug. 18, however, their identities and reason for being underground remain unresolved.<\/p>\n
The NYPD told The Guardian that there have been no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n
