They were speeding,\u201d said a worker at the nearby Mendez Deli who didn\u2019t give her name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI opened the store and I had customers waiting and they heard someone got into an accident. When my customer step out they saw the lady in the street and we called 911.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The worker then stepped out and saw the victim crumpled in the street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel so bad,\u201d she said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t handle seeing that. Andrew Gounardes <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Sen_Gounardes\/status\/2093859157052940408\" rel=\"nofollow\">tweeted Saturday<\/a> that the driver blew through a red light and didn\u2019t stop after hitting her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victim, a nurse coming off the night shift, has passed from her injuries,\u201d he wrote on X. \u201cPlease keep her in your prayers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deli worker said that drivers in the area often ignore the traffic light and road signs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have no control. The driving, maybe they drink and speed or maybe some health problem but you never know,\u201d she said. \u201cThe car was flying. You see how he hit her \u2026 I feel bad for her family and people in the neighborhood,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need security cameras because you have signs that say don\u2019t turn and they turn,\u201d she added. \u201cPeople don\u2019t have respect for the light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last month, the Mamdani administration announced that pedestrian fatalities citywide for the first half of the year were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/html\/pr2026\/vision-zero-pedestrian-deaths-at-historic-low.shtml\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">near historic lows<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through June 29, there were 94 traffic fatalities in New York City, including 46 pedestrians killed compared to 53 during the same period last year, a 13% decline.
