{"id":1034631,"date":"2026-08-31T08:46:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T08:46:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1034631\/"},"modified":"2026-08-31T08:46:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T08:46:16","slug":"the-1998-movie-bill-paxton-was-sure-would-be-a-bigger-hit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1034631\/","title":{"rendered":"The 1998 movie Bill Paxton was sure would be a bigger hit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <img width=\"1140\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Bill-Paxton-Actor-2013-Far-Out-Magazine-1140x855.jpg\" class=\"attachment-single-feature size-single-feature wp-post-image\" alt=\"Bill Paxton - Actor - 2013\" layout=\"fill\"  style=\"object-position: 50% 20%\" loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Credit: Far Out \/ Gage Skidmore<\/p>\n<p> Mon 31 August 2026 3:30, UK <\/p>\n<p>His name might not have been as well-known as the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/tags\/arnold-schwarzenegger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">Arnold Schwarzenegger<\/a>, Sigourney Weaver, or any of the other A-listers he shared the screen with, but as soon as people saw Bill Paxton\u2019s face, they knew exactly who they had just lost in 2017.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A regular collaborator of James Cameron, his turn as the obnoxious Colonial Marine William Hudson was one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/faroutmagazine.co.uk\/the-truth-behind-the-iconic-aliens-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">most memorable parts of Aliens, <\/a>and he returned to space as astronaut Fred Haise in Apollo 13, before landing on Earth to take part in an Old West shootout in Tombstone, and chasing down tornadoes in Twister. <\/p>\n<p> In 1998, Paxton appeared in Sam Raimi\u2019s neo-noir crime thriller, A Simple Plan, as Hank, who discovers a crashed plane in the Minnesota countryside laden with $4.4million in cash, which quickly drives a wedge between his brother, Billy Bob Thornton\u2019s Jacob, and his wife, Bridget Fonda\u2019s Sarah, to the point where the men\u2019s greed and paranoia threatens to destroy them all.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The movie was a critical smash, with reviewers praising its tension, characters, and performances, even finding a place at the Oscars, with Thornton scoring a nomination for \u2018Best Supporting Actor\u2019 and writer Scott B Smith being recognised in the \u2018Best Adapted Screenplay\u2019 category, but it sadly underperformed at the box office and made very little progress outside of hardcore cinemagoers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This cultural isolation was depressing for Paxton, who, in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2002\/aug\/22\/artsfeatures.festivals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"\">The Guardian<\/a> in 2002, lamented how A Simple Plan had gone under the radar when he had bet on the fact that it was going to take his career to the next level.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought that one might be the role that put it all together for me, that connected the dots,\u201d he quietly mused, \u201cI\u2019ve been in a lot of big movies, but they never seem to\u2026\u201d he trailed off at that point, although the interviewer seemed to believe that he was searching for the word \u201cmatter\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A Simple Plan took a lot of energy to get made, being that it was stuck in development hell for years and was even offered to Ben Stiller at one point, and even when the project was finally greenlit, filming was plagued by a lack of real snow in Minnesota, which they needed.
