<\/p>\nOne Nation\u2019s leader in New South Wales has likened his boss\u2019 maiden speech about Australia being \u201cswamped by Asians\u201d to Donald Trump\u2019s infamous \u201cgrab them by the p****\u201d comments, saying they both show voters do not worry about soundbites.<\/p>\n
Speaking to News24 host Andrew Clennell on Monday, New South Wales One Nation Leader Mike Newman was pressed on how his wife feels about his new role given Pauline Hanson\u2019s previous rhetoric about Asian immigrants.<\/p>\n
Mr Newman, a former NSW Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner to Japan and Korea, has a Japanese wife, with whom he shares four children.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact you do have half Japanese, half Australian children. The fact you have a Japanese wife, does that give you pause to run for One Nation when Pauline Hanson once said Australia was in danger of being swamped by Asians?\u201d Clennell asked.<\/p>\n
In her maiden speech to the Australian Senate in 1996, Ms Hanson said she believed \u201cwe are in danger of being swamped by Asians.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have their own culture and religion, form ghettos and do not assimilate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, I will be called racist but, if I can invite whom I want into my home, then I should have the right to have a say in who comes into my country.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Newman likened the comments to controversial comments made by Mr Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s sort of like the Trump \u2018grab them\u2026\u2019 moment, right. This is the same kind of thing,\u201d Mr Newman said.<\/p>\n
Mr Trump’s comments from a 2005 hot-mic exchange with a television host saw him say he was “automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them”.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don\u2019t even wait.<\/p>\n
“And when you\u2019re a star they let you do it… You can do anything. Grab them by the p—-.”<\/p>\n
Mr Newman added in the News24 interview: \u201cI don\u2019t really think that it\u2019s relevant.”<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think she\u2019s racist.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve met with her and \u2013 holding things to what people said decades ago doesn\u2019t pass the muster with an electorate that\u2019s sick of the status quo.\u201d<\/p>\n
Clennell then pressed Mr Newman on what his wife thought of him being One Nation leader.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think she\u2019s too happy I\u2019m getting into politics,\u201d he jokingly answered.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe loves Australia.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve got a newborn in a month or so, so that\u2019ll add further complications to the campaign trail \u2013 so I might be pushing around an orange pram at this stage.\u201d<\/p>\n
This is not the first time Mr Newman\u2019s background in Japan has been a feature of his pitch to voters.<\/p>\n
Last week, he stunned reporters as he responded to a journalist in fluent Japanese.<\/p>\n
Holding a press conference in the Hunter region on Friday,<\/a> Mr Newman outlined his policy ambitions and responded to reporters’ questions \u2013 including one from a Japanese outlet.<\/p>\n \u201cA question from Japan, sorry,\u201d Mr Newman said, before he began to respond in Japanese to the journalist.<\/p>\n The moment appeared not only to take reporters by surprise, but also Ms Hanson, who interjected to suggest to Mr Newman that he should reply in English so everyone could understand.<\/p>\n \u201cExcuse me,\u201d Ms Hanson said.<\/p>\n Mr Newman told the One Nation leader
