(iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Combining lean proteins, slow-digesting carbohydrates and <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_1392149\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/food\/healthy-foods\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">healthy fats<\/a> in meals and snacks can help stabilize those levels \u2014 what Palinski-Wade called the &#8220;No. 1 way&#8221; to improve overall sleep.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Some small studies suggest tart cherry juice may support sleep, and the expert named tart cherries \u2014 or 100% tart cherry juice \u2014 as her top choice.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_1392150\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/food-cravings-345pm-arent-random-heres-what-your-body-may-warning-you-about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>FOOD CRAVINGS AT 3:45 PM AREN&#8217;T RANDOM, HERE&#8217;S WHAT YOUR BODY MAY BE WARNING YOU ABOUT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;Tart cherries [are] one of the foods that have the highest amount of melatonin naturally, but they also have compounds that help to really extend that melatonin in our bodies and our body&#8217;s ability to use it,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Still, research linking tart cherry consumption to modest improvements in sleep duration or quality is limited and mixed; a 2025 systematic review reached a similar conclusion.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/woman-eating-cherries.jpg\" alt=\"Woman eating cherries.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>The expert recommends ingesting 4 to 6 ounces of 100% tart cherry juice or about a quarter cup of dried tart cherries for better sleep. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">For those who suffer from insomnia, Palinski-Wade recommends ingesting 4 to 6 ounces of 100% tart cherry juice, or about a quarter cup of dried tart cherries.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a really, really great tool to improve your sleep \u2013 and it&#8217;s really tasty, too,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_1392151\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/lifestyle\/quizzes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>TEST YOURSELF WITH OUR LATEST LIFESTYLE QUIZ<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Foods and drinks that may help reduce inflammation can also support sleep, the dietitian said.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;When we have more antioxidants in the body, more anti-inflammatory compounds, we&#8217;re really helping our body to achieve that more restful state,&#8221; Palinski-Wade said.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Foods rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds \u2014 including <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_1392152\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\/nutrition-experts-rank-5-healthiest-nuts-one-stands-above-rest\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">nuts and seeds<\/a>, olive oil and avocados \u2014 also provide healthy fats and other nutrients that may support sleep.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/coffee-cups.jpg\" alt=\"Closeup image of a woman and a man clinking coffee cups together in cafe\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Any more than 300 milligrams of caffeine per day becomes a &#8220;stressor to our body,&#8221; the expert warned. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p>Caffeine\u2019s sleep impact<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">On the other hand, Palinski-Wade warned that caffeine intake can negatively impact sleep quality.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;So many of us have a poor night&#8217;s sleep and the next day we <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_1392153\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/drinks\/soft-drinks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">reach for caffeine<\/a> to give us a burst of energy,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And there&#8217;s nothing wrong with a little bit of caffeine, but you have to look at how much you&#8217;re having and how close to bedtime.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/newsletters?cmpid=fnfirstnl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR HEALTH NEWSLETTER<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;And it&#8217;s a stimulant, so it&#8217;s harder to fall asleep,&#8221; Palinski-Wade warned. &#8220;If you have <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_1392155\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/food-drink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">foods or beverages<\/a> with a large amount of caffeine, and you&#8217;re having them in the afternoon or toward the evening, that is going to make it very hard to get restorative, restful sleep in the evening.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">For those who do drink caffeine, it is best to stop about 10 hours before bedtime, the expert advised.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/barista_with_coffee.jpeg\" alt=\"A barista smiles while she hands two coffees in to-go cups to a customer.\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Stimulation and inflammation from caffeine can disrupt sleep if consumed too close to bedtime.
