The federal<\/a> government is considering a ban on depictions of strangulation in pornography following the death of a 16-year-old girl<\/a> in a suspected case of choking during sex.<\/p>\n

Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek said the government was looking \u201cvery seriously\u201d at criminalising pornography depicting strangulation and suffocation, following a similar ban introduced in the UK<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is something wrong with a situation where 60 per cent of young people say they\u2019ve experienced strangulation during sexual encounters,\u201d she told ABC\u2019s Insiders on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is no safe way to strangle someone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The push comes after a 16-year-old girl died in hospital last Tuesday, days after she was found unresponsive at a home in Elanora Heights on Sydney\u2019s<\/a> Northern Beaches.<\/p>\n

Police are investigating whether the teenager died from asphyxiation after being choked during consensual sexual activity.<\/p>\n

Plibersek described the teenager\u2019s death as \u201cabsolutely heartbreaking\u201d and said the government would also revisit consent and respectful relationship education.<\/p>\n

Assistant Minister for Women Rebecca White backed further action.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve heard too many stories where women have experienced instances of extraordinarily traumatic health outcomes from strangulation,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cConcussion is another area where we\u2019re seeing an increase in violence against women having a significant impact, and I\u2019ve been raising that with them [Minister for Women Katy Gallagher and Minister for Health Mark Butler].\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI would definitely support any effort we can make to keep women safer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Calls for a ban have also come from NSW<\/a> Liberal leader Kellie Sloane, who has written to the prime minister urging the government to outlaw strangulation pornography.<\/p>\n

Sloane said on Monday that consent education was \u201ccritical\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cParents play a major role when it comes to consent education,\u201d she told ABC radio.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a hard conversation to have with your kids. But around consent, we need to model that behaviour as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Consent Labs chief executive Angelique Wan warned banning the content alone would have limited impact without better education about sexual violence and pornography.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t be having the conversation about a ban without also talking about education at the same time,\u201d she told AAP.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause our young people will be left in the same position \u2014 they will still be curious.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhich is why we need to be providing them with education to develop those critical thinking, digital and media literacy skill sets; that\u2019s going to equip them for the rest of their life.\u201d<\/p>\n
