(AP) \u2014 The bodies of a Texas chiropractor and at least one other person have been found after a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/grand-canyon-flood-bright-angel-water-arizona-8e2211e04f30b637e35ab95ecb1a1626\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">major weekend flash flood<\/a> swept through the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/national-parks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Grand Canyon<\/a>, and forecasters warned more flooding was possible as heavy rain shrouded the canyon walls.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s flash flood severely damaged the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/grand-canyon-water-pipeline-repairs-flooding-305a0474e6833237d57c7287b4e27e39\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only water pipeline<\/a> into the canyon. Officials barred tourists from staying at lodges and hotels inside Grand Canyon National Park and issued emergency water restrictions for year-round residents. <\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen hikers, including two on a dream trip with their chiropractor friend, remain missing Monday following waves of rain in the Bright Angel Creek area of the tourist destination that hosts 4.4 million visitors a year.<\/p>\n<p>The flood threatened people who hike far into the Grand Canyon<\/p>\n<p>The flood happened <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/photo-gallery\/deadly-flash-flood-forces-grand-canyon-evacuations-water-restrictions-photos-555174f4e12f4d7db925c469db45593a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deep in the canyon<\/a> near where the Colorado River flows, around popular lodges and camping areas where people hiking from one rim of the Grand Canyon to the other stop for the night. <\/p>\n<p>Scores of visitors had to be evacuated from the area by helicopter. He had been planning to rest through the hot day and spend the night near the hard-hit Bright Angel campground area.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, rangers told him it looked to be safe. Then, as the rain poured, they told him it was time to go. He thought of Nepal and the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nepal-china-tibet-chitwan-flood-bodies-bhotekoshi-river-ad4f11f22f7e8e80e17d7557c396e966\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">massive floods<\/a> and landslides that poured down mountain valleys last week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entire time it was raining \u2014 the entire time I\u2019m going through all this and packing \u2014 I\u2019m just keeping my eyes upstream, just praying that a wall of water isn\u2019t coming toward us,\u201d Evans said.<\/p>\n<p>One hiker killed is identified as rescuers search for his friends<\/p>\n<p>The family of John Giusti, 53, said the Texas chiropractor set out Thursday on a trip he dreamed of with two buddies \u2014 spending two nights at the bottom of the canyon fishing and hiking.<\/p>\n<p>They spoke to their families Thursday and found their campsite Friday. They have not been heard from since, the three families said in a joint statement released Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Searchers on the air and ground continue to look for Texas martial arts studio owner Brent Rosenkranz, 42, and Wyoming pilot Timothy Smith, 53, their families said.<\/p>\n<p>All three men had ties to Granbury, Texas. Clear days can quickly give way to thunderstorms and downpours. Forecasters warned more flooding could happen Monday or just about any time storms pop up.<\/p>\n<p>Rain also fell on part of the Dragon Bravo fire scar, a burn area left by a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/grand-canyon-reopens-north-rim-wildfire-arizona-89721f50cdf4ea57bcfaada4ab44f60c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lightning-caused wildfire<\/a> in July 2025. What might be a normal summer downpour somewhere else can become a charging wall of water in the canyon.<\/p>\n<p>El Nino has this year\u2019s monsoons in the desert especially intense<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s heavy monsoon rains are especially intense because there is a higher amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, mostly because of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/el-nino-climate-change-disasters-worsening-heat-cf2e0bbe4b241c5ad0141ca0f93f44dd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a strong El Nino<\/a>, said A. Park Williams, a hydroclimatologist at the University of California, Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>The natural warming of parts of the Pacific Ocean can warp weather globally. That extra water vapor in the southwest U.S. gets wrung out in the storm in the form of rainfall, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The link to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/climate-and-environment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">human-caused climate change<\/a> and the heavy Arizona rain is pretty strong, said climate scientist Daniel Swain of the California Institute for Water Resources.<\/p>\n<p>A few months ago, Swain and colleagues published a study in the journal Weather and Climate Extremes finding that during the summer, short-term intense downpours in the West \u2014 akin to the one that hit the Grand Canyon \u2014 have become 10% stronger since 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The flood hits water supply in the canyon<\/p>\n<p>The flood was a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/grand-canyon-arizona-water-pipeline-tourism-hotels-6cdbf12d42f89fc68bd3bdbe77bfe14c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">major blow<\/a> to an enduring effort to modernize the <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/grand-canyon-water-pipeline-a7fdd5b9055184179d8b5c7eea9cd33e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">water pipeline<\/a> that serves visitors and the roughly 1,600 residents of Grand Canyon Village.<\/p>\n<p>A $208 million rehabilitation of the pipeline and upgrades to the associated water delivery system started in 2023, with the park service calling it a crucial investment to ensure the park can meet the needs of residents and visitors. The project was expected to be completed next year.<\/p>\n<p>While the Grand Canyon has large storage tanks for potable water on the South Rim, they won\u2019t be refilled while the pipeline is out of service.<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p>Stengle reported from Dallas.
