New details also add weight to the theory that the weapon is a maneuverable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/25151\/russia-admits-its-allegedly-treaty-busting-cruise-missile-exists-but-denies-u-s-claims\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quasi-ballistic missile<\/a> rather than a true hypersonic cruise missile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The unusually detailed new breakdown of the Zircon missile identifies 70 enterprises and 84 individuals involved in its development and production while providing a component-by-component look at one of Moscow\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/sea\/our-best-look-at-russias-shadowy-zircon-hypersonic-missile\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">most closely watched<\/a> \u2014 and least-understood \u2014 weapons.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\" lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u203c\ufe0fDIU exposes details of russia\u2019s 3M22 Zircon ballistic missile \u2014 including its components, production chain, 70 companies involved, key personnel, and foreign equipment used to manufacture the weapon: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oOBqjUb8dS\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/t.co\/oOBqjUb8dS<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VqRSSA41iV\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/VqRSSA41iV<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (@DI_Ukraine) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DI_Ukraine\/status\/2094319143415664906?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">August 31, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The first evidence of Zircon\u2019s combat use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/air\/is-russia-really-using-zircon-hypersonic-cruise-missiles-in-ukraine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">emerged in February 2024<\/a>, when Ukrainian officials displayed recovered debris after a Russian strike. The wreckage included distinctive engine and steering-system components that Ukrainian specialists used to identify the weapon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Russia has since employed the missile on other occasions. Ukrainian authorities reported that a Zircon was launched from occupied Crimea during a major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/land\/claims-swirl-around-use-of-new-russian-missiles-to-strike-ukraine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">missile and drone strike in January 2026<\/a>, as we reported at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">While initially developed for use from warships and submarines, Zircon is understood to have been employed from ground-based launchers against Ukraine, with modified launchers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/44891\/russia-claims-it-launched-bastion-p-anti-ship-missiles-against-ground-targets-in-ukraine\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">K-300P Bastion<\/a> coastal defense system <a href=\"https:\/\/defence-blog.com\/ukraine-destroys-bastion-launcher-with-zircon-missiles-in-crimea\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">considered the most likely candidate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"683\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-1232959750.jpg\" alt=\"A serviceman stands near a Russia's Bastion mobile coastal defence missile system on the island of Alexandra Land, which is part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, on May 17, 2021. Photo by Maxime POPOV \/ AFP MAXIME POPOV<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/war-sanctions.gur.gov.ua\/en\/ballistics\/zircon\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">new entry<\/a> on Ukraine\u2019s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) War &amp; Sanctions portal includes an interactive 3D model and identifies systems ranging from the missile\u2019s radar seeker and onboard computer to its propulsion system and warhead. It also identifies foreign-origin electronics, including components associated with U.S. manufacturers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Among them, according to the GUR report, is a TGA2704 amplifier associated with TriQuint Semiconductor, now part of U.S. company Qorvo. The GUR also identifies an Altera Cyclone II EP2C5T144I8N field-programmable gate array (FPGA) associated with Altera Corporation, now part of Intel, and lists it as originating in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"697\" height=\"663\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Altera.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6584572\" style=\"width:697px;height:auto\"  \/>An Altera Cyclone II\u00a0Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), a type of microchip, which the GUR says was found in Zircon wreckage. GUR <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The alleged findings do not establish that either company knowingly supplied Russia\u2019s defense industry, nor do they explain precisely how the components reached Russian production lines. The GUR says it\u2019s seeking additional information on their origins and supply chains. Bearing in mind previous precedents, China could potentially be one source, being <a href=\"https:\/\/energy-solutions.co\/supply-chain\/trade-flows\/china-to-russia-dual-use-semiconductors\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a known vector<\/a> globally for recycled chips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Nevertheless, the disclosure highlights the continued presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/captured-russian-weapons-are-packed-with-foreign-microchips\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Western-origin electronics<\/a> in Russia\u2019s advanced weapons programs despite sanctions and export controls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The GUR lists the Zircon as approximately 26 feet long, with a body diameter of 2.2 feet, and a warhead weighing about 265 pounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The agency gives a maximum speed of Mach 8-9, a flight altitude of approximately 19-25 miles, and a separate \u201cmaximum fixed speed\u201d (presumably, sustained cruising speed) of Mach 6.8. These are Ukrainian intelligence assessments and cannot be independently verified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The database identifies the 3B222 active radar-homing head, manufactured by NPP Radar MMS, and a Baget-83 onboard digital computer produced by KB Korund-M.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"881\" height=\"782\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/radar.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6584576\"  \/>Reported 3B222 active radar homing antenna recovered from Zircon wreckage. GUR <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">It also identifies the 3B915 guidance units, the 3G22 warhead, and the 3L2211 solid-fuel rocket motor manufactured by NPO Iskra. Other Russian companies provide altimeters, control systems, power supplies, and other components.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" height=\"554\" width=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/engine.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6584575\"  \/>Reported remains of a 3L2211 solid-fuel rocket motor manufactured by NPO Iskra. GUR <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The reported propulsion information is particularly significant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Russian and other sources have consistently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/russias-zircon-hypersonic-missiles-now-deployed-on-frigate-officials-claim\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">described Zircon as a hypersonic cruise missile<\/a>, implying an air-breathing propulsion system burning liquid propellant, capable of sustaining hypersonic flight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">However, the physical evidence for such a propulsion system has always been less clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Open-source analysis by Fabian Hinz <a href=\"https:\/\/luftlage.substack.com\/p\/not-quite-a-diamond\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has highlighted<\/a> the apparent absence of a conventional air intake on Zircon. A scramjet- or ramjet-powered missile requires an intake to bring atmospheric oxygen into the engine, yet available imagery does not clearly show one. A Russian patent associated with the missile\u2019s jettisonable launch cap likewise does not reveal an obvious intake arrangement.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\" lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Just published my new OSINT investigation into Russia&#8217;s secretive Zircon missile whose combat use has risen sharply in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Available evidence suggests that Zircon is not a hypersonic cruise missile but rather a quasi-ballistic system.<\/p>\n<p>Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8DoQePRpX3\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/t.co\/8DoQePRpX3<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bIBS532FUB\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">pic.twitter.com\/bIBS532FUB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Fabian Hinz (@fab_hinz) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fab_hinz\/status\/2067159805559476683?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">June 17, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">More significant is evidence from recovered missile debris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Material examined by Ukraine\u2019s Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise included a circular metal structure interpreted as part of a solid-propellant rocket motor. The hardware appeared to be associated with Zircon\u2019s second stage rather than simply its launch booster (which would be used on a true hypersonic cruise missile to bring it up to operating speed). This suggests a two-stage weapon, with a solid-propellant rocket in each. This would match with what we have seen during shipboard launches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">That finding is consistent with Russian patent activity involving NPO Mashinostroyeniya and NPO Iskra. Patents associated with the companies describe solid-propellant rocket motors incorporating arrangements for aerodynamic-control equipment around the motor\u2019s exhaust system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">There is also evidence that Russian engineers developed advanced composite solid propellants specifically for Zircon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">None of this conclusively proves the missile lacks an air-breathing engine, but it certainly raises more questions about its classification. It should be noted that there are also some solid-fuel ramjet concepts, but these are much rarer applications.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"767\" height=\"429\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Zircon-first-items.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6584582\"  \/>In February 2024, evidence emerged that Russia had, for the first time, used the Zircon in attacks on at least one target in Ukraine. Ukrainian scientists showed a video of the Zircon wreckage \u2014 \u201cfragments of the engine and steering mechanisms [with] specific markings,\u201d seen here. via X <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">If Zircon is primarily rocket-powered, it may be better understood as a maneuverable quasi-ballistic missile that nonetheless reaches hypersonic speeds. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Such a weapon would use rocket propulsion to accelerate rapidly and climb to high altitude before descending toward its target along a trajectory that is partly ballistic but incorporates aerodynamic maneuvering \u2014 a so-called \u2018porpoising\u2019 or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boost-glide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">\u2018skip-glide\u2019 trajectory<\/a>. It could therefore reach hypersonic speeds without requiring sustained cruise under the power of an air-breathing system. The combination of high speed and unpredictable trajectory also makes it notably difficult for air defenses to deal with, characteristics shared with the air-launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/category\/kinzhal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kinzhal<\/a>, another Russian quasi-ballistic missile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">That interpretation could also help explain reports of a highly variable Zircon speed profile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Russian officials have claimed that the missile can reach approximately Mach 9. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/36945\/russia-says-this-is-our-first-glimpse-of-its-zircon-hypersonic-cruise-missile\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">During a 2020 test<\/a>, Russian military leadership said Zircon reached more than Mach 8 while flying to an altitude of roughly 17 miles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\"><strong>A Russian Ministry of Defense video that claims to show the Zircon test in the White Sea on Oct. 6, 2020:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazied-youtube-frame-thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a \u0433\u0438\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0437\u0432\u0443\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u0440\u0430\u043a\u0435\u0442\u044b \u00ab\u0426\u0438\u0440\u043a\u043e\u043d\u00bb \u0441 \u0431\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0430 \u0444\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0430\u0442\u0430 \u00ab\u0410\u0434\u043c\u0438\u0440\u0430\u043b \u0413\u043e\u0440\u0448\u043a\u043e\u0432\u00bb thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/hqdefault.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u041f\u0435\u0440\u0432\u044b\u0439 \u043f\u0443\u0441\u043a \u0433\u0438\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0437\u0432\u0443\u043a\u043e\u0432\u043e\u0439 \u0440\u0430\u043a\u0435\u0442\u044b \u00ab\u0426\u0438\u0440\u043a\u043e\u043d\u00bb \u0441 \u0431\u043e\u0440\u0442\u0430 \u0444\u0440\u0435\u0433\u0430\u0442\u0430 \u00ab\u0410\u0434\u043c\u0438\u0440\u0430\u043b \u0413\u043e\u0440\u0448\u043a\u043e\u0432\u00bb\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Ukrainian assessments have described a more complicated profile, with the missile reportedly flying at around Mach 5.5, accelerating to approximately Mach 7.5 near the target, and then slowing before impact. Those figures cannot be independently confirmed, but a boost-and-glide or quasi-ballistic trajectory could produce such a profile more naturally than sustained powered cruise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">At the same time, it should be recalled that \u2018hypersonic\u2019 does not necessarily imply a \u2018hypersonic cruise missile.\u2019 A ballistic or quasi-ballistic weapon can travel well above Mach 5, which appears to be the case here. The characteristics of the Zircon, as presented by the GUR, would also help explain official Ukrainian claims that the missiles <a href=\"https:\/\/ukrmedia.news\/en\/science-tech\/raketa-tsyrkon-kharakterystyky\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have been intercepted successfully<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/land\/pac-3-adapted-capability-effector-is-lockheeds-new-low-cost-patriot-interceptor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Patriot PAC-3<\/a> air defense systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">There is also a relevant technological precedent. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.kremlin.ru\/events\/president\/news\/27724\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NPO Mashinostroyeniya<\/a> has previously patented solid-propellant missiles using quasi-ballistic trajectories, including designs intended to maneuver at high-supersonic and hypersonic speeds. That does not establish a direct lineage to Zircon, but it does show that the concept is consistent with the company\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The other major takeaway from the release is the scale of Zircon\u2019s production network.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">One of Russia\u2019s leading missile houses, NPO Mashinostroyeniya is identified as the missile\u2019s main designer and manufacturer and prime contractor for Russian Ministry of Defense contracts covering its development and production.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">But the weapon depends on dozens of other organizations. NPO Iskra supplies the solid-fuel motor; NPP Radar MMS provides the radar seeker; KB Korund-M produces the onboard computer; and other enterprises supply guidance systems, altimeters, control electronics, warheads, power systems, and other specialized equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\"><strong>Another video, released by the Russian Ministry of Defense in May 2022, is said to show the Gorshkov launching a Zircon, although the missile is seen only at a distance with no details visible:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazied-youtube-frame-thumbnail\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Russia shows off Zircon hypersonic cruise missile thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/1788223643_815_hqdefault.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\tRussia shows off Zircon hypersonic cruise missile\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The U.S.-origin electronics claimed to have been identified by GUR are particularly notable because they demonstrate how Russia\u2019s sophisticated weapons production remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/captured-russian-weapons-are-packed-with-foreign-microchips\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">connected to international semiconductor supply chains<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">By linking specific enterprises and individuals to individual missile components, Ukraine has provided governments and investigators with new information that could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.twz.com\/sanctions-are-strangling-russias-weapons-supply-chain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used to pursue sanctions<\/a>, export-control enforcement, and efforts to disrupt Russia\u2019s supply chain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">The report also adds weight to continued open-source assessments of what kind of missile Zircon actually is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph article-paragraph skip\">Regardless of its classification, Zircon remains a formidable weapon. A rocket-powered missile capable of reaching hypersonic speeds, flying at high altitude, maneuvering, and potentially accelerating during its terminal approach presents a serious challenge to missile defenses.
