JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Sheriff T.K. Waters shared a stern warning to teens in Jacksonville after the sheriff\u2019s office worked to disperse a group of hundreds of juveniles at a \u201cplanned takeover\u201d event along Southbank<\/a>. <\/p>\n

He addressed the topic during the District 3 town hall meeting<\/a> on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not trying to tell people how to parent, but if your kids are out beyond curfew, they may find themselves in trouble,” Waters said.<\/p>\n

His message comes after the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office officers safely broke up the Saturday night gathering after witnessing some of the teens engaging in \u201cproblematic behavior\u201d like drug use, fighting and pepper-spraying each other.<\/p>\n

\u201cMake sure you\u2019re at home if you\u2019re underage before curfew because we are going to start arresting them,\u201d Waters said. <\/p>\n

Waters said he wouldn\u2019t disclose everything that JSO is doing to curtail the massive events that have hit areas like the beaches and the Orange Park Mall<\/a> in recent months. But, he said the agency was aware and monitoring these \u201ctakeover\u201d events.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe run into the problem where people try to justify it\u2019s just young people wanting to have fun,\u201d Wawters said.\u201cYoung people are responsible. Also, just like the rest of us, we need to make sure we\u2019re watching and paying attention to what\u2019s going on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Large gatherings require permits, and anyone under the age of 18 can not be out past curfew, which is 11 p.m. on weeknights or after midnight on weekends unless accompanied by an adult.<\/p>\n
