PALATKA, Fla. \u2014 Several local law enforcement agencies, including the Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office, are removing the controversial license plate readers that have raised widespread privacy concerns.<\/p>\n
The announcements in Jacksonville, Clay, Nassau, Baker and Putnam counties come after the Florida Department of Transportation issued a memo Monday revoking all approved permits for Automatic License Plate Reader Cameras (ALPR\u2019s) in the right-of-ways on the state highway system.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank god,\u201d said Reggie Murdoch of Putnam County. \u201cI mean you don\u2019t have no privacy no more. So it doesn\u2019t matter where you go or what you do. Somebody\u2019s watching something.\u201d<\/p>\n
The memo comes amid privacy concerns from citizens about how the data was being used. <\/p>\n
Tiffany Johnson of Putnam County is one of those concerned citizens. <\/p>\n
\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be filmed or pictures took of you everywhere you go,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cYou should be able to drive around without being surveyed.\u201d <\/p>\n
Governor Ron DeSantis was asked about FLOCK cameras today during his visit to Jacksonville.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve called for legislation that will protect Floridians from allowing the state to turn into some type of digital prison, digital surveillance state where somebody knows everything about what you\u2019re doing every day of the week,\u201d Governor DeSantis said. <\/p>\n
