Flashback:<\/strong> Sept. 2, 1982<\/p>\n 1982:<\/strong> Architect Helmut Jahn, Gov. Jim Thompson and Mayor Jane Byrne attended a \u201ctopping out\u201d ceremony<\/a> for the State of Illinois Center, which was also blessed by Archdiocese of Chicago Archbishop Joseph Bernardin.<\/p>\n Thompson became the\u00a0first tenant<\/a> to move into the center in November 1984, and the building was renamed the Thompson Center<\/a> in his honor in 1993. His office desk was from the Chicago Historical Society (it previously belonged to George Pullman<\/a>) and security concerns caused\u00a0bulletproof glass<\/a>\u00a0to be installed surrounding the space.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: The 40-year saga of State of Illinois Center<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Weather records <\/strong>(from the National Weather Service, Chicago<\/a>)<\/p>\n 1880:<\/strong> Rome designated the Diocese of Chicago an archdiocese<\/a>, raising it to preeminence among all dioceses in the region and established Bishop Patrick Feehan as the city\u2019s first archbishop.<\/p>\n 1909:<\/strong> State and Madison streets became the baseline<\/a> \u2014 or ground zero \u2014 of a new citywide grid system<\/a> that changed virtually all addresses and also formed the basis for the street systems of many suburbs.<\/p>\n Passion for Chicago\u2019s honorary street names leads to a guide book<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Numbers rose in logical fashion<\/a>, 100 block, 200 block, etc., about eight blocks to a mile. Anything west of State was \u201cWest,\u201d east was \u201cEast,\u201d north of Madison was \u201cNorth,\u201d and south was \u201cSouth.\u201d The east and south sides of streets got odd numbers; north and west sides of streets got even numbers.<\/p>\n The idea, suggested by Edward Brennan<\/a> in 1901, means anyone armed with the numbers and N, S, E, W directional signals can navigate anywhere in the city.<\/p>\n 1933:<\/strong> The Chicago Bears headed out of town for training camp for the first time<\/a> \u2014 with \u201cRed Grange conspicuously absent,\u201d the Tribune reported. The University of Notre Dame<\/a> hosted the team.<\/p>\n 1961:<\/strong> A\u00a0loose bolt<\/a> caused one-third of the tail section of a TWA Constellation plane to fall away minutes after takeoff from Chicago\u2019s Midway International Airport and crash into a farm field near southwest suburban Clarendon Hills. All 78 people aboard died.<\/p>\n 1984:<\/strong> Smoke detectors<\/a> became required in all multi-unit dwellings in Chicago. The new ordinance \u2014 approved unanimously in April 1984 by the City Council \u2014 imposed a fine up to $1,000 and six months in jail for violators. The deadline to install the devices in single-family homes was Dec. 1, 1984. Though the ordinance was the subject of heavy lobbying efforts by the smoke detector industry, Chicago Fire Commissioner Louis Galante said more than 90% of the city\u2019s fire deaths in 1983 were in dwellings without them.<\/p>\n 1989:<\/strong> After an almost two-year delay, Gov. Jim Thompson finally signed legislation making the Tully monster<\/a> the official state fossil<\/a> in Illinois.<\/p>\n 1992:<\/strong> Chicago-raised astronaut Mae Jemison<\/a> became the first Black woman in space. She was aboard Endeavour as part of the STS-47 Spacelab J mission.<\/p>\n 2015: <\/strong>Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz<\/a> was believed to have been shot dead by a few suspicious people in the morning in a remote, marshy area of the village.<\/p>\n Known as \u201cG.I. Joe\u201d in the community, he was well liked for his work mentoring kids, including running the Police Department\u2019s Explorer Post for young adults interested in a career in law enforcement.<\/p>\n Investigators said Gliniewicz, who had a troubled history in the department and had allegedly been stealing from the youth policing group he ran, tried to make his death appear to be a murder amid fears the thefts would come to light.<\/p>\n Melodie Gliniewicz, his wife, pleaded guilty<\/a> in February 2022 to a charge connected to her husband\u2019s financial crimes. She was sentenced to probation<\/a>.<\/p>\n 2018: <\/strong>The Bears traded for Khalil Mack<\/a>, the Raiders\u2019 27-year-old, two-time All-Pro edge rusher. Ryan Poles\u2019 first major move as Bears general manager signified his willingness to tear down the Bears roster in a rebuild.<\/p>\n The Bears sent 2019 first- and sixth-round picks and 2020 first- and third-round picks to the Oakland Raiders to acquire Mack.
