{"id":1037222,"date":"2026-09-01T17:29:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T17:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1037222\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T17:29:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T17:29:14","slug":"nc-teen-dies-after-getting-a-brain-eating-amoeba-wral-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1037222\/","title":{"rendered":"NC teen dies after getting a brain-eating amoeba :: WRAL.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A North Carolina teen who developed a rare illness caused by a brain-eating amoeba died on August 31, according to\u00a0The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n<p>WRAL previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/central-north-carolina-teen-rare-brain-infection-amoeba-august-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> when the teen contracted the illness.<\/p>\n<p>The NCDHHS said the illness caused by\u00a0Naegleria fowleri is &#8220;naturally present in warm freshwater like ponds,\u00a0lakes\u00a0and rivers&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On the Center for Disease Control&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/naegleria\/prevention\/index.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>, they describe the illness as &#8220;a rare but almost always fatal infection if the amoeba goes up the nose and to the brain&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The NCDHHS recommends that, when entering warm freshwater, especially later in the summer, to hold your nose or keep your head above water.
