{"id":1037532,"date":"2026-09-01T21:18:21","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T21:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1037532\/"},"modified":"2026-09-01T21:18:21","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T21:18:21","slug":"houston-mayor-says-his-city-is-a-better-location-than-austin-for-an-nhl-expansion-franchise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1037532\/","title":{"rendered":"Houston mayor says his city is a better location than Austin for an NHL expansion franchise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">After a strong round of expansion over the last decade, bringing in the Vegas Golden Knights, Seattle Kraken and Utah Mammoth (who are considered an expansion team; confusing, I know), the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_outkick-sports_article_main-content_article-body_6_3464989\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/sports\/nhl\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">NHL<\/a> is looking to grow again.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">The league wants to add two more clubs, one of which will be based in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_outkick-sports_article_main-content_article-body_6_3464990\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/us\/us-regions\/southwest\/texas\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Texas<\/a>. For Austin, the league has a chance to be the first of the four major leagues to set up shop there, a strategy that worked well in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">However, Houston is currently the biggest media market in the nation without an NHL team, something NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly recently confirmed is a big factor in the decision.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;We&#8217;re ready. In fact, we&#8217;re talking to multiple parties that are interested,&#8221; Mayor John Whitmire said in an interview with <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_outkick-sports_article_main-content_article-body_6_3464992\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/us\/nhl\/dallas-stars\/news\/houstons-efforts-land-nhl-franchise-why-mayor-john-whitmire-ready\/23844aaf8c5327f6c11a88c1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">The Sporting News<\/a>. &#8220;So when we get a proposal, if the city can do something to a system, we&#8217;ll be there. Since then, it has been home to some minor league teams, as has Austin.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_outkick-sports_article_main-content_article-body_6_3464993\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/outkick-sports\/stanley-cup-final-ratings-show-olympic-hockey-fever-alive-well-united-states\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>STANLEY CUP FINAL RATINGS SHOW OLYMPIC HOCKEY FEVER IS ALIVE AND WELL IN THE UNITED STATES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;I think [the NHL] would never regret it if they gave a franchise to Houston.
