{"id":1037809,"date":"2026-09-02T00:25:28","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T00:25:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1037809\/"},"modified":"2026-09-02T00:25:28","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T00:25:28","slug":"seven-years-later-the-bronxs-joker-stairs-remain-a-tourist-attraction-bronx-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1037809\/","title":{"rendered":"Seven years later, the Bronx\u2019s \u2018Joker\u2019 stairs remain a tourist attraction \u2013 Bronx Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/jokerstairs_clowns.jpeg\" class=\"crop-center wp-post-image\" alt=\"jokerstairs_clowns\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Since the release of \u201cJoker\u201d in 2019, the Guason Stairs on Shakespeare Avenue, now known as the Joker stairs, has been an iconic photo-op in the Bronx. <\/p>\n<p>Photo by ET Rodriguez<\/p>\n<p>On Shakespeare Avenue, off of 167th Street, sit the Guason stairs, most famously known as the \u201cJoker\u201d stairs since the eponymous movie of the Batman franchise was released in 2019.\n<\/p>\n<p>In the film, Arthur Fleck, played by Joaquin Phoenix, maniacally dances down the Bronx steps as he accepts his dark persona as the Joker and descends into criminal madness. To this day, seven years after the films release, tourists from all over flock to the area to take their own dancing photos, with some companies including the staircase in their tours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/contrastesdenuevayork.com\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Contrastes de Nueva York<\/a>, based in Midtown, Manhattan, specializes in tourists from Spanish-speaking countries and grants them tours of the five boroughs, minus Staten Island.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-147889 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/jokerstairs_clowsjose.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>Tour guide Jose Cano, with Cotrastes de Nueva York, leads a group of tourists in some poses on the \u201cJoker\u201d stairs. Photo by ET Rodriguez<\/p>\n<p>Locals use the stairs to connect from the segregated area at the top to the nearby 4 train at the bottom, and in 2023, the nonprofit CityArts enlisted several young people of the Summer Youth Employment Program to paint the stairs in an effort to reclaim them for the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, Sept. 1, Contrastes tour guide, Jose Cano, led a small group from Spain for a photoshoot at the 132 steps, and even had costumes for them to wear.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-147890\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/jokerstairs_crowd.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"  \/>There is almost always a crowd at the bottom of the \u201cJoker\u201d stairs near on Shakespeare Avenue as each takes turns taking photos, mimicking the Joker\u2019s maniacal dance. Photo by ET Rodriguez\n<\/p>\n<p>While some locals expressed finding the tourists obstructive and isolated, others have taken it as an opportunity to raise funds.<\/p>\n<p>Inaliz Berrocales was on Shakespeare Avenue selling Joker t-shirts to raise money for a back-to-school event organized by the nearby Kuts Y Sam Playroom Suite where kids can participate in open play and are also welcome.
