The suspect had no known connection to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/nfl\/\" id=\"auto-tag_nfl\" data-tag=\"nfl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NFL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe multi-page note, found in Tamura\u2019s pocket, included his claim he had CTE linked to playing football at his high schools in southern California, the source says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cStudy my brain please. I\u2019m sorry,\u201d Tamura wrote, according to the source. The note also mentioned a 2013 Frontline documentary <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/frontline\/documentary\/league-of-denial\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/frontline\/documentary\/league-of-denial\/\" target=\"_blank\">on the topic <\/a>of CTE and referenced former NFL players who suffered from the disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSources <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/midtown-shooting-suspect-left-note-mentioning-nfl-cte\/story?id=124163966\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/midtown-shooting-suspect-left-note-mentioning-nfl-cte\/story?id=124163966\" target=\"_blank\">told ABC News<\/a> that the note also accused the NFL of hiding football\u2019s potential risks to players\u2019 brains in order to maximize profits. \u201cHe blamed the NFL,\u201d the law enforcement source tells Rolling Stone. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tCTE, a neurodegenerative brain disease that has been connected to repeated blows to the head, has been seen in athletes, including hockey players and boxers, as well as military veterans. The disease, which was found in a study of donated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-sports\/degenerative-brain-disease-found-in-most-donated-nfl-players-report-252933\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brains of NFL players<\/a>, has been associated with \u201cimpulsivity, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and explosivity,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/cte-impact-young-football-players-1234804580\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one study<\/a>. Symptoms can include loss of memory, changes in mood, confusion, and difficulty thinking clearly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tTamura, 27, was a high school football player, but he never played professionally. Sources told NBC that so far, investigators have found no evidence he suffered a traumatic brain injury or was diagnosed with potential CTE, which can only be confirmed after death through an autopsy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/new-york-city\/\" id=\"auto-tag_new-york-city\" data-tag=\"new-york-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York City<\/a> Mayor Eric Adams told Fox 5 on Tuesday that it \u201cappeared\u201d Tamura was \u201cgoing after\u201d NFL employees. That\u2019s what blows my mind, honestly. Tamura had mental health crises that required two separate, involuntarily 72-hour holds in 2022 and 2024, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/07\/29\/nyregion\/nyc-shooting-manhattan\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/07\/29\/nyregion\/nyc-shooting-manhattan\" target=\"_blank\">the source reportedly said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThe law enforcement source who spoke with Rolling Stone says Tamura had been working an overnight security job at the Horseshoe hotel and casino in Las Vegas before driving to New York and using his AR-15-style rifle to open fire.
