In one of his standard TruthSocial rants<\/a>, President Donald Trump<\/a> complained Tuesday that he was getting blamed for Stephen Colbert\u2019s \u201cLate Show\u201d cancellation \u2015 even though he once explicitly called for CBS to \u201cterminate\u201d the host.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody is saying that I was solely responsible for the firing of Stephen Colbert from CBS, Late Night. That is not true!\u201d Trump raged. \u201cThe reason he was fired was a pure lack of TALENT, and the fact that this deficiency was costing CBS $50 Million Dollars a year in losses \u2014 And it was only going to get WORSE!\u201d<\/p>\n

Amid his legal battles with CBS\u2019s parent company Paramount Global, Trump explicitly called for the network to \u201cterminate<\/a>\u201d Colbert\u2019s contract in September, saying he could \u201crecommend someone, much more talented, and smarter, who would do it for FREE!\u201d<\/p>\n

While CBS has said the cancellation was \u201cpurely a financial decision,\u201d and expected losses have been reported<\/a> by some media outlets, Paramount hasn\u2019t provided a figure. \u201cThe Late Show\u201d was the most highly rated<\/a> late night program in its time slot.<\/p>\n

Critics, including some prominent Democrats<\/a>, have speculated that the \u201cLate Show\u201d cancellation was a result of Paramount\u2019s settlement with Trump, who\u2019d sued the media conglomerate for $20 billion over an episode of CBS News\u2019 \u201c60 Minutes.\u201d Trump claimed that the episode, which featured an interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris<\/a>, was deceptively edited to increase her chances of beating him in the presidential election.<\/p>\n

The $16 million settlement<\/a> came as Skydance was seeking to acquire Paramount in a merger that required the go-ahead from the Trump administration. That acquisition was approved on Thursday<\/a>, three weeks after the two parties agreed to settle a lawsuit many legal scholars said was without merit.<\/p>\n

Following news of the settlement, Colbert slammed the agreement as a \u201cbig fat bribe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAs someone who has always been a proud employee of this network, I am offended. I don\u2019t know if anything \u2014 anything \u2014 will repair my trust in this company,\u201d he quipped. \u201cBut, just taking a stab at it, I\u2019d say $16 million would help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr has also indicated that the network will take a rightward swing, saying last week that Skydance has vowed to provide programming that \u201cembodies a diversity of viewpoints from across the political and ideological spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even though Trump doesn\u2019t want to be blamed for Colbert\u2019s ouster, he called for more late night firings.<\/p>\n
