Douglas MacArthur declared after <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-v-j-day-chicago-tribun\/205007288\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan formally surrendered<\/a> aboard the deck of the USS Missouri. (AP)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1923:<\/strong> The Tribune provided the first reports to America on <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-all-tokio-in-flames-chi\/179978774\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a major earthquake in Japan<\/a> \u2014 a temblor measuring 7.9 in Tokyo that resulted in 100,000 deaths from the subsequent fires.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"The first U.S. Department of Justice &quot;paddy&quot; wagon automobile with seating for 12 took to Chicago's streets for the first time in 1928. (Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1928:<\/strong> The federal government purchased a new patrol wagon \u2014 with \u201ccomfortable seating capacity for twelve persons,\u201d the Tribune reported \u2014 for use by U.S. marshals in Chicago. The <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-us-buys-its-first-patr\/179978937\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">patrol wagon<\/a> was the first one ever used in the city by national authorities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"Walter Payton (34) is king of the mountain in this pileup of Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers at the season opener on Sept. 2, 1979, at Soldier Field in Chicago.
