{"id":1038706,"date":"2026-09-02T10:59:30","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T10:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1038706\/"},"modified":"2026-09-02T10:59:30","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T10:59:30","slug":"queensland-police-investigate-after-5500-sheep-worth-1-7m-stolen-from-farm-queensland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1038706\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland police investigate after 5,500 sheep worth $1.7m stolen from farm | Queensland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Queensland police are investigating after about 5,500 Dorper sheep worth more than $1.7m were allegedly stolen from a western <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/australia-news\/queensland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Queensland<\/a> farm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Police said the sheep were stolen from a property outside Blackall, about 830km west of Brisbane, between February and May this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Detective Sen Sgt Paul Elliot, from the rural and stock crime squad, said the sheep had an estimated value of about $1.7m (\u00a3899,000).<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">They are fitted with white National Livestock Identification System tags and are Dorper sheep, a breed with white wool but a black face. Both ewes and rams were taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Elliot urged anyone with information about the theft or who had seen Dorper sheep matching the description in the area to come forward.<\/p>\n<p><a data-link-name=\"standard link button Primary\" data-spacefinder-role=\"inline\" data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/email-newsletters?CMP=copyembed&amp;CMP=emailbutton\" class=\"dcr-rh233e\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sign up for the Breaking News Australia email<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cLivestock theft investigations can be complex, often spanning large geographical areas, which is why we work closely with producers, saleyards, transport operators and industry stakeholders to identify offenders and disrupt criminal activity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">The AgForce general president, Shane McCarthy, said it was a \u201ca concerning amount of sheep that have been stolen\u201d and would have a significant effect on the farm\u2019s bottom line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a concerning rise in the number of incidents like this happening across the state,\u201d he said. \u201cWe would trust that the police are taking these matters very, very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">He said a sheep theft of that scale would require a plan, time and more than one person. Sheep rustlers will sometimes take a group into a property where they can be bred to gain the value of their progeny and then slowly sold to abattoirs over time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Thefts are often discovered at the abattoir, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI would say that it\u2019s been thought out for a while,\u201d he said. \u201cI would suggest that one or two sheep here and there, even up to you know 10 or so sheep, is opportunistic. Stock theft is typically discovered during a muster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Martin, who has farmed Dorper sheep, said some properties have as many as 25,000 sheep.
