San Francisco-based Uber<\/a> plans to eliminate about 3,300 jobs, or 10% of its global workforce, in the company\u2019s largest round of cuts since the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

The restructuring was designed to reduce management layers, simplify the company\u2019s organizational structure and free up money for growth, innovation and autonomous vehicles, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi<\/a> said in a message to employees Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Uber had approximately 34,000 employees worldwide at the end of 2025, according to the company\u2019s annual report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company did not disclose how many of the affected positions are in San Francisco or elsewhere in the Bay Area.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone whose role has been affected has already been notified,\u201d Khosrowshahi wrote.<\/p>\n

Uber\u2019s headquarters are at Mission Bay. The company said it plans to concentrate global teams in its largest hubs, including San Francisco and New York, while asking most remote employees to move to an office.<\/p>\n

About 1% of Uber employees will be allowed to work fully remotely, according to Khosrowshahi\u2019s message. The company will continue enforcing its hybrid work policy, which requires employees to work in the office at least three days a week.<\/p>\n

Some teams will be combined. Uber plans to bring its restaurant, retail and direct-delivery operations under a unified structure, while merging its core services engineering and science teams.<\/p>\n

Khosrowshahi said the cuts were prompted by organizational complexity created during years of rapid growth.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last 5+ years, Uber has grown by orders of magnitude, with our top line nearly tripling,\u201d he wrote. \u201cBut that growth has also brought complexity: more layers, more coordination, more fragmented ownership.\u201d<\/p>\n

The layoffs come as Uber invests heavily in autonomous vehicles and faces growing competition from robotaxi companies such as Waymo and Tesla. Waymo currently operates some autonomous rides through Uber\u2019s platform in Austin and Atlanta, while also expanding its own service into additional markets.<\/p>\n

Uber has said it plans to invest more than $10 billion in autonomous-vehicle partnerships and related initiatives in the coming years.<\/p>\n

The cuts also follow a series of more targeted reductions earlier this year. The new layoffs are the company\u2019s largest since May 2020, when Uber eliminated about 6,700 jobs as the pandemic sharply reduced demand for rides.<\/p>\n

Uber\u2019s workforce reductions apply only to employees.
