Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today, September 2. <\/p>\n<p>Before dawn, crews began wrapping, disassembling, and moving \u201cBlue\u201d (2019), one of 10 inaugural works of visual art on display when the Kennedy Center\u2019s 4.6-acre REACH campus opened in September 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Kennedy Center did not provide a reason or advance notice of the work\u2019s deinstallation, but the NPS issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/nama\/learn\/management\/rock-creek-parkway-closure-rod.htm?ref=hyperallergic.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">street-closure notice<\/a> earlier this week indicating that the removal would be complete by Wednesday afternoon. The teardown project has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/life\/local-life\/kennedy-center\/kennedy-center-remove-blue-statue-partial-closures-rock-creek-and-potomac-parkway\/65-eaae4f49-c367-4ff0-acb1-95fa9fbfeb63?ref=hyperallergic.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">caused major delays<\/a> on Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, a major thoroughfare into the city. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/2026\/09\/02\/kennedy-center-remove-landmark-blue-sculpture-campus\/?ref=hyperallergic.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Post<\/a>, the Joel Shapiro and Ellen Phelan Foundation will decide where it is next installed.<\/p>\n<p>The painted aluminum sculpture features rectangular appendages resembling arms and legs in the recognizable stick-figure style of the artist, who <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/joel-shapiro-sculptor-of-emotive-figures-dies-at-83\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">passed away last year<\/a> at the age of 83.
