{"id":1039902,"date":"2026-09-03T01:09:22","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T01:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1039902\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T01:09:22","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T01:09:22","slug":"jury-in-malta-acquits-businessman-yorgen-fenech-in-killing-of-journalist-daphne-caruana-galizia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1039902\/","title":{"rendered":"Jury in Malta acquits businessman Yorgen Fenech in killing of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VALLETA, Malta (AP) \u2014 A jury in Malta on Wednesday acquitted the Maltese businessman accused by prosecutors of being the mastermind of the 2017 car bomb killing of crusading investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, sparking renewed calls for accountability in the Mediterranean island nation.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/journalists-malta-valletta-daphne-caruana-galizia-43d43ce8ef224cfc37f02fd516406f92\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caruana Galizia\u2019s killing<\/a> shocked Europe, led to protests that toppled a prime minister and exposed a <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/malta-eu-court-passport-visas-ruling-67645b54f38cf50dafb55aeb697627ce\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">culture of impunity<\/a> in the European Union\u2019s smallest state.<\/p>\n<p>Yorgen Fenech, a prominent Maltese businessman, was indicted in 2021 on charges of complicity and criminal conspiracy. Prosecutors accused him of being the mastermind of the slaying and of having ordered and paid for it.<\/p>\n<p>He pleaded not guilty and the jury on Wednesday, in an 8-1 vote, found him not guilty on both counts. Her sons were in the courtroom when the verdict was read out but left without commenting to reporters. <\/p>\n<p>In a statement later posted to Facebook, the family said the verdict denied Caruana Galizia the \u201cjustice she deserves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNine years after Daphne\u2019s brutal assassination, the institutional failures that enabled her murder remain unaddressed and unreformed. Lasting justice means no person should ever face the same risks again,\u201d the statement said. \u201cOur country failed to protect Daphne. It owes it to her to prevent other lives being lost.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The opposition Nationalist Party organized a silent march late Wednesday, saying in a statement that it respected the verdict but demanding accountability over who ordered her assassination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter years of investigations, inquiries and judicial proceedings, justice has still not reached where it needed to reach \u2013 neither for Daphne\u2019s family nor for our country,\u201d the party said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The government, for its part, said it had always provided the needed support and resources for the investigation and remained committed to seeing justice through. They were each <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/journalists-malta-assassinations-valletta-c267693326c17a8c77f1dd03511e2cf3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sentenced to 40 years<\/a> in prison.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, two other men were sentenced to life in prison, the maximum penalty possible, after being <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/malta-eu-caruana-galizia-murder-trial-jury-3de55fceec314699f58495e7b6da4786\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convicted of complicity<\/a> in the murder. Jamie Vella and Robert Agius were accused of supplying the bomb that killed Caruana Galizia.<\/p>\n<p>Another man, Vincent Muscat, pleaded guilty in 2021 for his role in the slaying, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>A self-confessed middleman, taxi driver Melvin Theuma, was granted a presidential pardon in 2019 in exchange for testimony.<\/p>\n<p>The slaying, and the culture it exposed, led to calls for reforms of Malta\u2019s judicial and legal systems and greater protection for journalists. Tim Gibson, the deputy advocacy director for the Committee to Protect Journalists, said Wednesday that the group would continue to seek justice.<\/p>\n<p>He said Wednesday\u2019s verdict was \u201dheartbreaking for her family, who &#8211; almost nine years after her death &#8211; are still waiting for justice.
