The New York City Council is putting $1 million toward expanding student programming at the 9\/11 Memorial & Museum,<\/a> an investment that officials say will support field trips for up to 20,000 students as the city marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Council Speaker Julie Menin<\/a> is set to announce the funding Thursday at the Lower Manhattan memorial, where Council members will also hold a wreath-laying ceremony honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed on Sept. 11, 2001.<\/a><\/p>\n

The museum already offers free field trips for K-12 schools in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut through existing public and private support. The new funding will help it expand that programming and reach more students, while also paying for audio guides, outreach to schools and training for educators, according to a Council spokesperson.<\/p>\n

The money will benefit students beyond the public school system and will place a particular focus on eighth graders, though the museum offers programming for a range of grade levels.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we approach the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, it is more important than ever that a new generation of New Yorkers understands what happened that day and carries forward the stories of those we lost,\u201d Menin said in a statement.<\/p>\n

The challenge is becoming more pronounced as memories of the attacks recede. Beth Hillman, president and CEO of the 9\/11 Memorial & Museum, said about 100 million Americans alive today are too young to remember 9\/11.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why our educational programming is so vital,\u201d Hillman said.\n<\/p>\n

The museum offers guided, self-guided and virtual programs designed for different age groups. Its programs for older students explore the attacks, their aftermath and their continuing impact, while younger students are introduced to the events through age-appropriate lessons focused on what happened and how people responded.<\/p>\n

The Council funding will also support the museum\u2019s Anniversary Digital Learning Experience, a free program that uses first-person accounts from a survivor, an NYPD first responder and relatives of people killed on 9\/11. The museum provides accompanying classroom materials tailored to different grade levels.<\/p>\n

The investment comes as the museum makes a broader push to reach generations with no firsthand memory of the attacks. Earlier this week, it unveiled \u201cIn Their Honor,\u201d a new exhibition focused on the aftermath of Sept. 11 and the ways New Yorkers responded.<\/p>\n

The exhibit includes a sculpture made from hundreds of children\u2019s drawings, material on community service and artistic responses to the attacks, and an account of the long-term health effects of exposure near Ground Zero.<\/p>\n

Menin has longstanding ties to Lower Manhattan and the museum. She previously chaired Community Board 1, was a founding trustee of the 9\/11 Memorial & Museum and helped establish the World Trade Center Health Registry.<\/p>\n
