The Prime Minister is expected to announce an investment in the manufacturing sector on Thursday.Justin Tang\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/mark-carney\/\">Mark Carney<\/a> will travel to northern Ontario today for an announcement regarding Canadian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/manufacturing\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/manufacturing\/\">manufacturing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Carney\u2019s itinerary says he\u2019ll make the announcement in Thunder Bay and that it will involve a \u201chistoric investment\u201d in the sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It also says he\u2019ll later tour a wildfire management centre and meet with crew members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The announcement comes amidst an escalating trade war with the United States, with Canada set to impose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-ottawa-announces-counter-tariffs-us-products-worker-business-support\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-ottawa-announces-counter-tariffs-us-products-worker-business-support\/\">retaliatory tariffs<\/a> on a range of American goods next week after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new levies on Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Carney has said that during failed trade talks in Washington last month, U.S. negotiators pushed for concessions that would have wiped out key Canadian sectors such as the automotive industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Union and industry leaders have urged Ottawa not to rush back to the table with the U.S., saying the federal government should wait for a deal that makes manufacturing in Canada sustainable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Open this photo in gallery: Mark Carney speaks with the media in Ottawa on Tuesday.
