Gotham just lost another of its Finest: Police Officer Didarul Islam was the first one shot Monday when a madman cut loose in a Midtown office building<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The shooter, Shane Tamura, killed three more and wounded a fourth before taking his own life.<\/p>\n

Officer Islam, though off duty, was doing what police officers do: protecting lives by risking their own.<\/p>\n

Islam, 36, was working as a security guard but wearing his uniform on Monday \u2014 and every cop becomes a potential target the moment he or she dons the uniform; they\u2019re the public\u2019s first line of defense. <\/p>\n

Tamura saw the blue and took the officer out, first thing.<\/p>\n

Relatives and neighbors describe Islam, a father of two with his wife expecting their third, as a pillar of his community.<\/p>\n

A friend said he joined the force<\/a> despite the risks, because \u201che wanted to leave behind a legacy for his family, something they could be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n

He certainly accomplished that.<\/p>\n

But none of that heroism matters to the lefties who insist on smearing cops as racist villains.<\/p>\n

And so it was no coincidence that Zohran Mamdani\u2019s reaction to Monday\u2019s horror all but erased Didural Islam, even though the mayoral candidate is pretending to moderate his long-held anti-cop views. <\/p>\n

Vacationing back on the family estate in Uganda, Mamdani tweeted he was \u201cheartbroken to learn of the horrific shooting\u201d and \u201cholding the victims, their families, and the NYPD officer in critical condition in my thoughts\u201d (though Islam\u2019s death had already been reported) and finished with \u201cGrateful for all of our first responders on the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hardly squares with Mamdani\u2019s record: \u201cWe don\u2019t need an investigation to know that the NYPD is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety,\u201d he tweeted in 2020; \u201cthere is no negotiating with an institution this wicked & corrupt. Defund it. Dismantle it.\u201d<\/p>\n

When a social-media post mocked a crying police officer, Mamdani retweeted it, adding, \u201cnature is healing.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s been a leading cop-defamer<\/a>, over and over demanding police, a face of \u201cwhite supremacy,\u201d be \u201cdefunded.\u201d<\/p>\n

Was Didarul Islam, a Bangladeshi immigrant said to be a religious Muslim, a \u201cwhite supremacist\u201d or \u201cracist\u201d?<\/p>\n

Or more like \u201ca true-blue New Yorker,\u201d as Mayor Eric Adams put it, who gave his life in the service of others?<\/p>\n

Fine: Mamdani these days has dropped the \u201cdefund\u201d demands and even eventually posted a tribute to Officer Islam. <\/p>\n

But he\u2019s yet to fully disavow his anti-cop barbs. <\/p>\n

And rather than rebuild the force\u2019s ranks<\/a>, as the other candidates vow, he\u2019d disband the NYPD\u2019s Strategic Response Group, which raced to the scene Monday.<\/p>\n

His big \u201canti-crime\u201d idea is spending $1.1 billion essentially on new social workers.<\/p>\n

Most New Yorkers are mourning the loss of a true public servant and appreciating anew the enormous sacrifices police make to protect them.<\/p>\n
