{"id":1040912,"date":"2026-09-03T14:10:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T14:10:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1040912\/"},"modified":"2026-09-03T14:10:25","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T14:10:25","slug":"keto-diet-cuts-liver-fat-by-67-in-new-prediabetes-study-research-finds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1040912\/","title":{"rendered":"Keto diet cuts liver fat by 67% in new prediabetes study, research finds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!\n  <\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">The <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621343\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/diet-trends\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">keto diet<\/a> may have surprising benefits for liver health, a new study suggests.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\" class=\"speakable\">The research, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, studied 42 adults who had <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621344\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">obesity<\/a>, prediabetes and excess liver fat.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">In a randomized clinical trial, the participants were assigned to three <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621345\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/weight-loss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">weight-loss diets<\/a> \u2013 a low-carb ketogenic diet, a Mediterranean diet and a low-fat, mostly plant-based diet.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621346\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/secret-weight-loss-may-hiding-gut-new-study-suggests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>SECRET TO WEIGHT LOSS MAY BE HIDING IN YOUR GUT, NEW STUDY SUGGESTS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The keto diet\u2019s calories consisted of about 4% carbohydrates and 73% fat, according to the study. The reduction was linked to a decrease in the liver\u2019s production of new fat.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Glucose and insulin measures also generally improved more in the keto group. About 50% of participants in that group no longer met the criteria for prediabetes by the end of the trial, compared with 29% of those following the <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621348\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/food-drink\/recipes\/cuisines\/mediterranean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Mediterranean diet<\/a> and 7% of those on the low-fat diet.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621349\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/one-common-type-fat-may-increase-diabetes-risk-another-helps-fight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>ONE COMMON TYPE OF FAT MAY INCREASE DIABETES RISK, WHILE ANOTHER HELPS FIGHT IT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The study\u2019s short duration and small sample size \u2014 about 14 people in each diet group \u2014 limit how broadly the findings can be applied to the general population, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">The researchers concluded that, among people with <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621350\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/category\/health\/nutrition-and-fitness\/obesity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">obesity<\/a>, prediabetes and excess liver fat, the composition of a weight-loss diet may influence certain metabolic outcomes beyond the effects of weight loss alone. (iStock)<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Registered dietitian nutritionist Ilana Muhlstein reflected on the study findings.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">&#8220;I love more and more validation and recognition that calories are not equal,&#8221; the California-based expert told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Muhlstein said people often reduce weight loss to &#8220;just a calorie deficit,&#8221; but this study showed that differences in macronutrients were associated with different changes in <a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621351\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">health markers<\/a> despite similar weight loss.<\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\"><a data-omtr-intcmp=\"fnc_health_article_main-content_article-body_6_8621352\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/health\/popular-diet-trend-boost-mental-health-older-adults-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><strong>POPULAR DIET TREND COULD BOOST MENTAL HEALTH AMONG OLDER ADULTS, STUDY FINDS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-layout-index=\"5\">Although weight loss occurred across all three groups, Muhlstein said the participants experienced different internal metabolic changes.
