Despite several high-profile incidents including the stabbing spree and subsequent police shooting of a woman in Times Square last month<\/a>, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch released NYPD data on Thursday indicating that the city saw just 195 shootings between June 1 and Aug. 31 of this year. That\u2019s down from the 227 shootings reported at the same point in 2025, which had been the previous all-time record low.<\/p>\n

Out of those nearly 200 shootings, 249 people were hurt in the gunfire, which authorities say is 44 fewer than the previous record low of 293 set in 2018. Police also reported that there were 66 murders in that same timeframe, 12 fewer than the previous record low of 78 set in 2017.<\/p>\n

Just in August, cops say 61 shootings occurred across the city, and 76 people were hit by gunfire, 13 fewer and 14 fewer, respectively, when compared to the same time in 2025. Homicides also fell in August, with 23 reported killings, down from 35 in 2025. <\/p>\n

In the first eight months of 2026, police reported, there had been 442 shooting incidents, 47 fewer than the previous lowest of 489 in 2025. Similarly, there were 538 shooting victims, 73 fewer than 611, which was previously the lowest on record in 2025. <\/p>\n

Finally, there have been 173 murders so far this year, 18 fewer than the previous record low of 191 set in 2017.\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe NYPD delivered both the safest summer and first eight months of the year for shooting incidents, shooting victims, and murders in recorded history,\u201d Tisch said in a statement. \u201cThese historic lows all happened while managing an unprecedented series of high-profile events, including the NBA Finals, the World Cup, Sail 250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the nation. The city\u2019s public safety milestones extended to our subway system and public housing, reaching record lows in gun violence, murders, rapes, and robberies in August. This progress is only possible because of the extraordinary work of the men and women of the NYPD, and I am deeply grateful for their commitment to keeping New York City safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

This comes against the backdrop of several high-profile crimes in the Big Apple that made headlines.\n<\/p>\n

On Aug. 12, 15-year-old Riley Billingslea was shot to death<\/a> in a Bronx apartment by a 16-year-old boy. On Aug. 18, 30-year-old Shakeema Davis, a mother, was stabbed to death inside <\/a>Brooklyn\u2019s Lincoln Terrace Park<\/a> at a crowded barbecue after she spurred an ex\u2019s advances. Most recently, on Aug. 31, Pamela Cisneros stabbed Bank of America executive Erin Piacenti and injured a 68-year-old man in a Times Square stabbing spree before she was shot to death by police.<\/p>\n

Police also say overall crime in the New York subway system fell in August, with 163 incidents reported compared to 178 last year. Police also said that there had been no murders, shootings, shooting victims, or rapes in the subway system last month.<\/p>\n

Despite this, police report that overall major crime declined by\u00a0 6.6% for the month. In terms of percentages, murder dropped by 34.3%, auto theft declined by 16.2%, robbery fell by 13.3%, burglary decreased by 9.1%, grand larceny fell by 6.5%, and rape was down by 1.7%.<\/p>\n

Still, felony assaults increased by 3.1%, a number police attribute to repeat offenders. Authorities report that 263 individuals have been arrested three or more times for felony assaults, a whopping 205.6% increase compared to the same period in 2018.<\/p>\n

Since the start of the year, hate crimes have increased by 15.8%, 58 more confirmed hateful incidents compared to\u202flast year. For August,\u202fthere were\u202f45\u202fconfirmed\u202fhate crimes and 62 incidents reported as hate crimes.\u202f <\/p>\n

Anti-Jewish hate crimes decreased by 13.6% (19 vs. 22) compared to the same period last year.
