The rocket began sliding sideways shortly after rising off the pad, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/3-4xv0UxIhY\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/3-4xv0UxIhY\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">crashing back to Earth<\/a> just 14 seconds after liftoff. And Gilmour Space was not banking on full success today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether we make it off the pad, reach max Q, or get all the way to space, what&#8217;s important is that every second of flight will deliver valuable data that will improve our rocket&#8217;s reliability and performance for future launches,&#8221; the company said about the mission, which was known as Eris-1, in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gspace.com\/post\/gilmour-space-announces-launch-window-for-australia-s-first-sovereign-orbital-rocket\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.gspace.com\/post\/gilmour-space-announces-launch-window-for-australia-s-first-sovereign-orbital-rocket\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">February statement.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gilmour Space sounded an optimistic note after the launch as well. &#8220;Today, Eris became the first #AustralianMade orbital rocket to launch from Australian soil \u2014 ~14s of flight, 23s engine burn. Big step for launch capability. Gilmour Space, which is based on Australia&#8217;s Gold Coast, originally aimed to fly as early as March, but that plan was scuttled by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.<\/p>\n<p>The company then targeted mid-May but was foiled by a technical issue: On May 15, Eris&#8217; payload fairing, the clamshell that protects satellites during launch, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/launch-of-australias-1st-homegrown-orbital-rocket-delayed-indefinitely-due-to-payload-fairing-issue\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/launch-of-australias-1st-homegrown-orbital-rocket-delayed-indefinitely-due-to-payload-fairing-issue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unexpectedly popped off<\/a> while the rocket was sitting on the pad.<\/p>\n<p>The culprit was a surprise &#8220;power surge, caused by electrical backfeed from downstream devices,&#8221; Gilmour Space explained in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GilmourSpace\/status\/1928385214604005706\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GilmourSpace\/status\/1928385214604005706\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow\">X post on May 30.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After fixing that issue, the company geared up for a try in late June. That didn&#8217;t happen, however, thanks to strong winds near the spaceport, which Gilmour Space operates just north of the town of Bowen. The target date then continued slipping to the right due largely to unfavorable weather, until Eris was finally able to get off the ground today.<\/p>\n<p>Adam Gilmour and his brother James founded Gilmour Space in 2015, with the goal of making Australia a major player in the spaceflight field. A big part of that vision centers on Eris, an 82-foot-tall (25-meter-tall) rocket designed to launch up to 474 pounds (215 kilograms) of payload to sun-synchronous orbit.<\/p>\n<p>The company, whose workforce has grown to about 200 people, also builds satellites. In fact, its ElaraSat spacecraft bus launched for the first time just last month on SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-launches-human-remains-reentry-capsule-and-more-on-transporter-14-rideshare-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/spacex-launches-human-remains-reentry-capsule-and-more-on-transporter-14-rideshare-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Transporter-14 rideshare mission<\/a>. On that debut mission, ElaraSat carries an instrument for CSIRO, Australia&#8217;s national science agency: a hyperspectral imager that will help <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationaus.com\/gilmours-maiden-elarasat-mission-launch-expected-monday\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.innovationaus.com\/gilmours-maiden-elarasat-mission-launch-expected-monday\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">keep tabs on water quality<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s launch was the first orbital attempt of any kind from Australian soil in more than 50 years.
