Make it six in a row.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day should win the four-day holiday weekend with around $22 million. That’s six straight weekends at No. 1, which no movie has managed since Avatar: The Way of Water held for seven in 2022. Destin Daniel Cretton’s sequel sits at $896.4 million domestic and will cross $900 million this week — a feat only Star Wars: The Force Awakens achieved in 2015. Brand New Day is fast approaching that film’s all-time domestic record of $936.66 million, but its streak at No. 1 ends next weekend, when Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman conjure up a new box-office champ with Practical Magic 2.

More from Gold Derby

The Odyssey holds on for second with about $15 million in its eighth weekend. Christopher Nolan’s epic fell only 27% last weekend to $14.4 million. At $568 million domestic, it’s about to pass The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($574.9 million) for 18th all time. Universal is keeping it on Imax 70mm screens through September, which is a big reason it keeps refusing to drop.

Coyote vs. Acme lands third with roughly $14 million. Ketchup Entertainment’s rescue of the Looney Tunes movie Warner Bros. shelved opened to $15.9 million, the biggest debut in the distributor’s history, and audiences handed it an “A” CinemaScore.

Fourth should go to Insidious: Out of the Further with about $7 million. The Sony and Blumhouse sequel is at $46 million domestic heading into its third weekend, and its 59% second-weekend drop to $10.2 million was a better hold than either Insidious: Chapter 2 or The Red Door managed.

Rounding out the top five is Cars with around $6 million. Disney and Pixar are re-releasing the 2006 original for its 20th anniversary, and it should draw families over the long weekend now that most of the country is back in school.

Just outside is Paramount’s By Any Means at roughly $5.5 million, with Mark Wahlberg as a mob hitman turned FBI informant and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the agent working him. A24’s Onslaught, Adam Wingard’s follow-up to The Guest, is looking at about $3 million. Lionsgate’s Fall 2: Deadpoint opened Wednesday, Sony and Crunchyroll have a 4K reissue of Akira, Fathom is running all five Hunger Games movies, and Trafalgar has Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour — Live from Paris.

Here are Gold Derby’s predicted box-office rankings for the top five over the Sept. 4-7 weekend:

Spider-Man: Brand New Day — $22 million

The Odyssey — $15 million

Coyote vs. Acme — $14 million

Insidious: Out of the Further — $7 million

Check back Monday for actuals and how they stacked up against our predictions.

New releases

By Any Means
Director: Elegance Bratton
Distributor: Paramount Pictures
A notorious mafia hitman and a young Black FBI agent team up to investigate the murders of civil rights leaders in 1966 Mississippi.
