JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 We\u2019re hearing from Jacksonville city leaders on how they plan to try to prevent drownings in the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we\u2019ll start with collecting data, seeing where the drownings are happening and if there\u2019s various subpopulations at most risk \u201a\u201d said City Council President Nick Howland (Group 3 At-Large). <\/p>\n
\u201cI think we will look at education efforts. (Let\u2019s) see if we\u2019re educating the public enough on the dangers of retention ponds and storm waters and other bodies of water,\u201d Howland said.<\/p>\n
>>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<<<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n Howland established a Special Committee on Drowning Prevention this week at the request of Councilman Reggie Gaffney Jr. (District 8). <\/p>\n It comes after two children drowned in retention ponds on the Northside last month just weeks apart from each other.<\/p>\n The Northside neighborhood is in Gaffney Jr.\u2019s district.<\/p>\n \u201cPotentially I can impose legislation. That\u2019s what I\u2019m thinking about,\u201d said Gaffney Jr., the chair of the new special committee. \u201cMaybe putting barriers and fences around mandating these ponds.\u201d<\/p>\n Action News Jax asked Gaffney Jr. what safety measures the city council could impose on private properties. <\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s the kind of conversation we\u2019ll be having during these special committees. We\u2019ll work with the private developers. We\u2019ll work with the city of Jacksonville. We\u2019re going to work with state officials.
