New Democrat Fatima Shaban has won the Ontario provincial byelection race in the riding of Scarborough Southwest.<\/p>\n

NDP Leader Marit Stiles congratulated Shaban at a victory party on Thursday night alongside fellow NDP MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were coming after this seat hard,\u201d Stiles told supporters. \u201cThe richest people, the most power people, they threw everything at this community.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis community said \u2018we will not be bought,’\u201d she added. \u201cThe more they got to know Fatima, the more they loved her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaban took the stage following Stiles\u2019 speech.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t imagine living anywhere else other than Scarborough Southwest,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is the community that\u2019s helping me to raise my kids, it\u2019s where I grew up and I\u2019m going to fight like hell to make sure we get our fair share.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe knocked on 177,000 doors!\u201d she added. \u201cWe ran a campaign that we can be proud of with absolute positivity. We fought like we can\u2019t lose and this is how we\u2019re going to fight in the next general election!\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaban defeated Liberal candidate Ahsanul Hafiz and PC candidate Noor Tarun.<\/p>\n

The NDP lost two other byelections on Thursday<\/a><\/strong> night to the Progressive Conservatives in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek and York-Simcoe.<\/p>\n
