{"id":1042958,"date":"2026-09-04T13:37:14","date_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1042958\/"},"modified":"2026-09-04T13:37:14","modified_gmt":"2026-09-04T13:37:14","slug":"bjc-anthem-deal-still-pending-ahead-of-anticipated-spike-in-healthcare-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1042958\/","title":{"rendered":"BJC-Anthem deal still pending ahead of anticipated spike in healthcare costs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With healthcare costs forecasted to jump by double digits next year, the St. Louis region\u2019s largest healthcare provider and Missouri&#8217;s largest commercial health insurer remain at odds over how exactly each side\u2019s consumers will pay the bill.<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing stalemate between BJC Healthcare and insurance giant Anthem follows a flurry of deals struck in the last 12 months between the hospital system and three other major insurers \u2014 Cigna Healthcare, Aetna and UnitedHealthcare.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BJC warned the hospital system\u2019s current agreement with Anthem will lapse at the end of the year, and that \u201cservices and providers at BJC HealthCare will be considered out-of-network for patients with Anthem insurance plans starting Jan. 1, 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a letter sent to Missouri employers in July, BJC Chief Financial Officer Scott Hawig and Chief Managed Care Officer J.C. McWilliams wrote that despite opening negotiations in February, &#8220;we have not achieved the level of meaningful progress we hoped for at this stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hawig and McWilliams\u2019s letter lists three sticking points: BJC is alleging Anthem denies claims unnecessarily, needs to streamline and reduce prior authorization requirements and isn&#8217;t paying for services in a &#8220;fair and timely&#8221; manner.<\/p>\n<p>BJC said on its website that its negotiators would also seek to ensure &#8220;reimbursement rates cover the rate of inflation and rising costs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Visits by Anthem members to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children\u2019s Hospital, Siteman Cancer Center, Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Parkland Health Center, among others, would be deemed out-of-network without a contract in place by next year, BJC said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health care services provided by Washington University\u2019s School of Medicine, a BJC affiliate, are covered under a separate legal agreement and would be unaffected by a potential contract lapse between BJC and Anthem, the hospital system said.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"With healthcare costs forecasted to jump by double digits next year, the St. Louis region\u2019s largest healthcare provider&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":1042959,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[35],"tags":[417668,51393,210,1141,27504,1142,27507,27503,67,132,68],"class_list":["post-1042958","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health-care","tag-bjc-healthcare","tag-elevance-health","tag-health","tag-health-care","tag-health-economics","tag-healthcare","tag-service-economy","tag-social-programs","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@us\/117213046232014888","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1042958","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1042958"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1042958\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1042959"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1042958"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1042958"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1042958"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
