CLAY COUNTY, Fla. \u2014 A 12-year-old student at Argyle Elementary School was arrested after writing a threatening note containing the names of several students and staff members, the Clay County Sheriff\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n
A classmate seated near the student saw the note, which the sheriff\u2019s office described as a \u201cDeath Note,\u201d being written and immediately told a teacher. The student then threw the note in a trash can. <\/p>\n
The sheriff\u2019s office said the teacher retrieved the note and alerted school administrators and the school resource officer.<\/p>\n
The sheriff\u2019s office, working with Clay County District Schools, identified and interviewed the student, who was arrested and taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice\u2019s Duval County Detention Center, officials said. The student also faces discipline under the district\u2019s Student Code of Conduct.<\/p>\n
The student was charged under Florida Statute 836.10(2), which makes it a crime to send, post or transmit a written or electronic threat to kill or harm another person, or to threaten a mass shooting or act of terrorism.<\/p>\n
The sheriff\u2019s office praised the student who reported the note, saying the incident underscores the importance of speaking up about concerning behavior. <\/p>\n
Officials urged residents to report threats or suspicious activity at schools through the FortifyFL or SaferWatch apps, or by calling the Clay County Sheriff\u2019s Office at (904) 264-6512.<\/p>\n
