By 1973, The Allman Brothers Band had released several songs, including \u201cBlack Hearted Woman\u201d. Still, they failed to have much success at radio until \u201cRamblin\u2019 Man\u201d. The song is the first single from Brothers And Sisters, The Allman Brothers Band\u2019s fourth studio album.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cRamblin\u2019 Man\u201d was written by Dickey Betts, one of the original members of The Allman Brothers Band. \u201cRamblin\u2019 Man\u201d begins with the chorus, which says, \u201cLord, I was born a ramblin\u2019 man \/ Tryin\u2019 to make a livin\u2019 and doin\u2019 the best I can \/ And when it\u2019s time for leavin\u2019 \/ I hope you\u2019ll understand \/ That I was born a ramblin\u2019 man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, \u201cRamblin\u2019 Man\u201d was born from Betts\u2019 own life, although he had to go way back into his memory. Betts recalls a childhood of relocation, which is what inspired him to write \u201cRamblin\u2019 Man\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was a kid, my dad was in construction and used to move the family back and forth between central Florida\u2019s east and west coasts,\u201d Betts later reveals<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019d go to one school for a year and then the other the next. I had two sets of friends and spent a lot of time in the back seat of a Greyhound bus. Ramblin\u2019 was in my blood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Betts later recalls the conversation he had with a friend, Kenny Harwick, who built barbed wire fences. An offhand comment led to Betts penning \u201cRamblin\u2019 Man\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI would come back to see him every night,\u201d Betts remembers<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019d say, \u2018How you been doing? Playing your music and doing the best you can, I reckon.\u2019 And that line just stuck with me. I said, \u2018That\u2019s rhythm, [a] rhythmic line.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The idea for the song may have come from Betts\u2019 friend, but the title belongs to a 1951 Hank Williams tune.<\/p>\n

\u201cI changed it around,\u201d Betts says. \u201cAnd instead of \u2018playin\u2019 my music,\u2019 [I wrote] \u2018I\u2019m tryin\u2019 to make a livin\u2019, you know? Trying to relate to people that don\u2019t play music. I sit down to write it, and I wrote it in five minutes. It\u2019s like you [were] writing a letter to your girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRamblin\u2019 Man\u201d is significant to The Allman Brothers Band for more than just becoming their first Top 5 single. It is also the first song that the group recorded after Duane Allman, another founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, tragically passed away<\/a> in a motorcycle accident.<\/p>\n
