NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson has issued a passionate defense of actor-turned-racer Frankie Muniz, with the “Malcolm in the Middle” star being criticized in his first full season in the Truck Series<\/a>. Muniz, 39, raced six times in NASCAR in 2024 across the Xfinity and Truck Series before going full-time in the latter this year with Reaume Brothers Racing<\/a>.<\/p>\n

However, Muniz has been accused of using the riches from his successful acting career to fund his motorsport career. Muniz, who will star in the upcoming “Malcolm in the Middle” reunion miniseries<\/a>, ended those claims, revealing his promise to his wife.<\/p>\n

“I don’t spend any of my money going racing. I made a promise to my wife that I would not do that. So, I can kill that rumor right there,” Muniz said. He has also been defended by the 2021 Cup Series champion, Larson, who stated the actor belongs in NASCAR.<\/p>\n

“Anybody racing in any of the three series has talent and ability enough to be there,” Larson said. “I just hope that he can get into a situation someday where you can really see his talent from being in a car or a truck that is better equipped to go run towards the front,” Larson added. “You want to see him succeed because if he does succeed, it’s only going to do good things for our sport.”<\/p>\n

Muniz has had a tough welcome to full-time NASCAR racing, sitting 24th in the points standings through 16 races. His best finish this year was 10th in the season opener at Daytona International Speedway.<\/p>\n

For Muniz, acting was a profession, but racing is his passion. “When I’m in that race car and I put my visor down and I drive out of that pit lane, I feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “That’s what I’m supposed to do and that’s what I’m doing.”<\/p>\n

“Excitement and all the emotions. That’s what I love about racing,” he added. “The highs are so high and the lows are unbelievably low. It’s awesome.”<\/p>\n

“When I originally started racing, I was kind of at the height of my [acting] career. I had tons of offers to do movies and shows and all that,” continued Muniz. “Very easily could have stayed in that business. But I wanted to give racing a try.<\/p>\n

“And to compete at the top level, you have to put in the time and effort that professional race car drivers are doing, right? You can’t do it halfway.”<\/p>\n

Muniz has appeared in two TV projects and two films since going full-time in NASCAR. “If I wanted to go racing for fun,” he said. “I would not be racing in the truck series.<\/p>\n

“I’d be racing at my local track or I’d be racing some SCCA club events. I want to be one of the top drivers there are. I want to make it as high up in NASCAR as I can.
