She was initially drafted by the Las Vegas Aces in 2024 before being selected by the Golden State Valkyries in an expansion draft. After being waived by the Valkyries, Martin headed to LA, but after a short time, she is heading back home to the Windy City.

Kate Martin signed with the Chicago Sky after being waived by the Sparks

Before the 2026 season started, Martin suffered an injury that kept her out for a while and led Golden State to waive her. After being waived by the Valkyries, Martin landed in Los Angeles on a developmental contract before the Sparks converted it to a standard WNBA contract. Unfortunately for Martin, her time in LA didn’t last long, but another organization close to home quickly picked her up.

welcome to The Chi, Kate! 🩵

we’ve officially signed Kate Martin to a developmental contract. #skytown pic.twitter.com/ryjZjcvSMC

— Chicago Sky (@chicagosky) September 2, 2026

Martin, an Evansville, Illinois, native, signed a developmental contract with the Chicago Sky, reuniting her with a former coach. Chicago head coach Tyler Marsh was on the Golden State staff when Martin was there, and scooped her up quickly after LA cut her loose. After signing with the Sky, Martin is on her third team this year alone as her journey continues to take numerous twists and turns. With the regular season winding down and the Sky not in contention for a playoff spot, Martin’s spot on the roster remains in question.

The organization is having a down year after shipping former star Angel Reese to Atlanta, making multiple questionable offseason moves. It is unclear if Martin will be activated for the Sky’s final four games of the season after the FIBA World Cup break, but adding her to the mix makes a lot of sense.

Martin signing with the Sky could be just the fit she is looking for

The move not only brings Martin back to her home state, but it also makes sense for the organization. The Sky recently announced that guard Skylar Diggins will miss the rest of the season after re-aggravating a lingering knee issue, creating the need for some guard help. The Sky aren’t going anywhere this season, and we could see some major change within the organization after the season ends. A good way to boost the roster and the organization’s morale, and create some stability, would be to keep Martin in 2027 and beyond.

Martin has been a fan favorite dating back to her time with the Hawkeyes, and Iowa fans will definitely make the short drive to Chicago to see her play. She is also a great teammate who always sticks up for her teammates, and she has proven she can be a solid role player when she gets the minutes. There are a lot of benefits to signing and keeping Martin on the roster, and hopefully, Chicago makes the obvious choice to keep her.

Add us as a preferred source on GoogleFollow

The WNBA journey for former Hawkeye fan favorite Kate Marin took another twist after she had just gotten…

[49
62,67,132,68,232
post-1045485","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wnba","tag-sports","tag-united-states","tag-unitedstates","tag-us","tag-wnba
["GET
