The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dallassportsjournal.com\/category\/dallas-wings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dallas Wings<\/a><\/strong> guard was one of nine players on the 12-woman roster making a World Cup debut.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/w\/wilsoa01w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A\u2019ja Wilson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/p\/plumke01w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kelsey Plum<\/a><\/strong> withdrew from the team Monday for health reasons, and USA Basketball <a href=\"https:\/\/dallassportsjournal.com\/paige-bueckers-team-usa-world-cup-debut-china-dallas-wings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">added Washington Mystics teammates<\/a> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/c\/citroso01w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sonia Citron<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/i\/iriafki01w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kiki Iriafen<\/a><\/strong> in their places four days before the opener. Citron had 2 points, 1 rebound, and 3 assists in 12 minutes Friday, and her steal in the final 1:47 set up a Bueckers 3-pointer.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">USA Basketball named Bueckers to the roster on Aug. 6. She, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/c\/clarkca02w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Caitlin Clark<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/r\/reesean01w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angel Reese<\/a><\/strong>, and Iriafen also played for the United States in March at the qualifying tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where the Americans went 5-0.<\/p>\n<p>Paige Bueckers On Team USA\u2019s First Game As A Unit<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Americans had a couple of days of practice together before Friday, and Bueckers wanted game reps.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt was great. Obviously, the first one we got to shake off our rust,\u201d Bueckers said. \u201cGet back into game shape. Get back into game mode. And it\u2019s our first time playing together as a team, as a unit. So we got a couple of days of practice, but there\u2019s nothing like getting game reps, getting game experience together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All 12 Americans scored. Clark had 14 points and 11 assists, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/h\/howarrh01w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rhyne Howard<\/a><\/strong> scored 14, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.basketball-reference.com\/wnba\/players\/y\/youngja01w.html?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=dallassportsjournal.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-09-05_bbr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jackie Young<\/a><\/strong> scored 12. The United States led 27-14 after one quarter and 49-29 at halftime.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The excitement after the game extended to many of Clark\u2019s teammates, and she expects that to keep growing through the tournament.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt\u2019s so fun to see all of the fans, and their excitement, and how much the women\u2019s game is growing globally,\u201d Clark said. \u201cEven after the game, there\u2019s just so much excitement, and not only for myself, for so many players on this team, and that\u2019s a really cool thing. I think that\u2019ll only continue to grow as we progress through the tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The last U.S. loss at a World Cup came in the 2006 semifinals against Russia in Brazil. The Americans have won the last four World Cups and 11 overall, and a fifth consecutive title would match the Soviet Union\u2019s five in a row from 1959 to 1975. Wings coach <strong>Jos\u00e9 Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong> is on U.S. coach <strong>Kara Lawson<\/strong>\u2018s staff as a scout coach.<\/p>\n<p>Italy And Czechia Next In Group D<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Group D play continues Sunday against Italy at 1:45 p.m. CT on TNT and HBO Max and closes Monday against Czechia at 1:45 p.m. CT on the same outlets. Italy is at its first World Cup since 1994, and Czechia is at its first since 2014. The group winner goes straight to the quarterfinals on Sept. 10. Second and third place go to a qualification round on Sept. 8, and fourth place is eliminated.
