ORANGE PARK, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 With the new school year just around the corner, a learning center in Orange Park is helping parents get their children back into the school groove.<\/p>\n

You might have heard of the term \u201csummer slide\u201d \u2014 the learning loss children face after months away from the classroom. It can make the first few weeks of school more challenging than they need to be.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe see it every school year,\u201d said Rafael Urquiza, owner of Sylvan Learning.<\/p>\n

Urquiza noted that students can lose up to two months of grade-level equivalency because they aren\u2019t exercising their brain muscle.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our busiest times in school is the first progress report that comes out,\u201d Urquiza said. \u201cAnd then I have a lot of parents calling \u2014 panicking.\u201d <\/p>\n

No matter the learning method, whether it\u2019s through a tablet or classic paper and a No. 2 pencil, Urquiza suggests keeping it fun \u2013 and even offering a motivational prize at the end.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I was at home, I would just say, \u2018Hey, let\u2019s make cookies,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m gonna get them to help me make the cookies. So what does that do? \u2018Hey, measure the cups. How many teaspoons?\u2019 Multiplication. All of a sudden, they\u2019re multiplying. They\u2019re doing fractions.\u201d<\/p>\n

For parents like Angela Larson, who homeschools her two children, setting aside at least one hour a day for reading helps keep their comprehension skills sharp.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom is reading, kids are reading. You can choose a book of your choice, you can listen to an audiobook,\u201d Larson said. \u201cYou can listen and read at the same time if you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

Larson also has one child enrolled at Sylvan Learning and said tutoring centers are a valuable investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I have a gap in my teaching, this is totally the gap filler,\u201d she said. \u201cIt fills that gap in such a way that my children are getting a full education experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
