{"id":1047197,"date":"2026-09-06T16:22:20","date_gmt":"2026-09-06T16:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1047197\/"},"modified":"2026-09-06T16:22:20","modified_gmt":"2026-09-06T16:22:20","slug":"queensland-youth-workers-to-stop-work-after-staff-allegedly-assaulted-bit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/1047197\/","title":{"rendered":"Queensland youth workers to stop work after staff allegedly assaulted, bit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Staff at Queensland\u2019s youth detention centres will again walk off the job amid allegations there were more than 500 attacks on workers in the past year alone. <\/p>\n<p>Australian Workers Union Youth Detention Centre members, including in Brisbane and Townsville, will launch seven days of rolling strikes from 7am on Monday, intensifying pressure on talks with the state government. <\/p>\n<p>The week-long action will begin with a 12-hour work stoppage on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>Subsequent stoppages will range from one to 12 hours through the rest of the week, the union said.<\/p>\n<p>AWU Queensland Acting Secretary Mark Raguse said the \u201cdrastic step\u201d came amid calls on Premier David Crisafulli to \u201cdeliver an offer that recognises and respects their youth justice frontline\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Corrective Services Minister Laura Gerber has \u201crepeatedly claimed that the government are negotiating in good faith\u201d, he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, they have just filed for conciliation at the QIRC (Queensland Industrial Relations Commission), without having put a reasonable offer on the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe violence our members experience would not be acceptable in any other workplace in Queensland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Raguse said Mr Crisafulli and Ms Gerber were \u201cmeeting with victims of crime across Queensland\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI encourage them to stop in Wacol and Townsville and speak to their employees who have become victims of crime in their own workplaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government\u2019s changes to bail laws will fail if they don\u2019t protect and strengthen their workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AWU reported at least 14 serious alleged staff assaults in the past seven days, including alleged head punches, a bite which drew blood, and urine thrown at a staff member.<\/p>\n<p>In the past 12 months, there have been more than 500 serious alleged assaults, the union said.<\/p>\n<p>The AWU has been in protracted negotiations over pay and safety disputes.
