Earlier this month,\u00a0Knox News\u2019\u00a0Adam Sparks reported<\/a> that Tennessee<\/a><\/strong> defensive back Boo Carter<\/a><\/strong> missed multiple team activities and was confronted by team leaders. On Tuesday, ESPN\u2019s Chris Low provided further details on Carter\u2019s future with the program.<\/p>\n

\u201cLotta speculation about the future of Tennessee DB Boo Carter the last two weeks after he missed multiple workouts, but sources tell ESPN that Carter is not being dismissed from the team,\u201d Low wrote<\/a><\/strong> on X. \u201cCoach Josh Heupel<\/a><\/strong> will address the situation at his press conference later Tuesday.\u201d<\/p>\n

On3\u2019s Pete Nakos confirmed Low\u2019s report. Boo Carter had an impressive debut campaign last season, recording 38 tackles, a sack and an interception. For his efforts, he was named an All-SEC Freshman.<\/p>\n

After the season, there were rumors that Carter was planning on entering the transfer portal, but the Tennessee native ultimately opted to return to Knoxville for his sophomore season. In his announcement, he mentioned\u00a0The Volunteer Club<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the Tennessee-focused\u00a0NIL<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0collective \u2014 to indicate he\u2019d signed a new\u00a0NIL deal<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carter played high school football at Bradley Central (TN), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 111 overall player in the 2024 recruiting cycle, according to the\u00a0Rivals Industry Ranking<\/a><\/strong>, an equally weighted average that utilizes all three major recruiting services.<\/p>\n

Evidently, experts don\u2019t expect Carter to lose any steam in the 2025 campaign despite some of the offseason drama surrounding him. Carter was named a preseason All-SEC Third-Team selection by the league\u2019s media.<\/p>\n

Carter\u2019s absence this summer isn\u2019t the only personnel issue Tennessee has dealt with this offseason. In April, quarterback Nico Iamaleava<\/a><\/strong> entered the NCAA Transfer Portal after he and Tennessee couldn\u2019t agree on a new NIL deal. At SEC Media Days, Josh Heupel discussed the importance of being able to remain focused in the face of these issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the end of the day, it\u2019s never about who\u2019s not in your building,\u201d Heupel said. \u201cIt\u2019s about who is in your building. For us, you can lose a quarterback at a lot of different times. December transfer portal, spring transfer portal. You can lose one Week 1, first quarter of a ball game, in your open, and now you\u2019re on to number two through injury.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got to have a next guy up mentality.
