A tropical storm warning<\/a> is in effect until further notice for Kaua\u02bbi County, including Kaua\u02bbi and Ni\u02bbihau, as Hurricane Lowell approaches from the south.<\/p>\n

As of the National Weather Service\u2019s 11 a.m. advisory Sunday, Hurricane Lowell was located about 545 miles south-southwest of L\u012bhu\u02bbe, moving north-northwest at 6 mph with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, making it a Category 3 hurricane.<\/p>\n

Lowell has turned north, and is expected to stay on a north-northeastward track over the next couple of days, carrying its center just west of Kaua\u02bbi and Ni\u02bbihau on Monday night. <\/p>\n

Sustained winds could reach 35 to more than 55 mph with higher gusts. <\/p>\n

A flood watch begins at noon today and runs through Tuesday afternoon, with rain totals topping 14 inches in high elevations. Storm surge of 1 to 3 feet above ground is possible in surge-prone coastal areas, and high surf, with a couple of feet of runup could be possible, through Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

County officials will provide updates if evacuations become necessary.<\/p>\n

Kaua\u02bbi Emergency Management urges residents to complete their storm preparations today. Secure loose items around your yard, fill your gas tank, charge your devices, refill prescriptions and make sure your household has water, food and supplies on hand.<\/p>\n

Kaua\u02bbi County Mayor Derek Kawakami signed an emergency proclamation in anticipation of severe weather because of Hurricane Lowell, which was a Category 3 hurricane as of the 11 p.m. advisory update Saturday<\/a> from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.<\/p>\n

Kaua\u02bbi Emergency Management continues to coordinate closely with county, state and federal partners as well as non-governmental organizations and community partners. Updates will be provided as conditions warrant.<\/p>\n

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and monitor official county channels for updates.<\/p>\n

Kaua\u02bbi Marathon and Half Marathon<\/strong><\/p>\n

Organizers of the sold-out Kaua\u02bbi Marathon and Half Marathon announced on the event website in a blog post by Robin Jumper that the 2026 race is canceled<\/a> because of approaching Hurricane Lowell.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation,\u201d says the blog post.<\/p>\n

Priorities of community preparedness and the safety of runners and volunteers guided the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will be back in 2027. Until then, please take care of one another,\u201d says the blog post.<\/p>\n

Kaua\u02bbi Police Department reports that because the marathon was canceled, all previously scheduled full and partial road closures<\/a> planned for the event are no longer in effect.<\/p>\n

Kaua\u02bbi County Department of Water severe weather preparation and awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kaua\u02bbi County Department of Water reminds customers to prepare for possible water service impacts during severe weather.<\/p>\n

Natural disasters, such as high winds, flooding and fallen trees, can damage water infrastructure or disrupt power to water sources, leading to water service interruptions.<\/p>\n

Customers should store the recommended minimum of 1 gallon per person per day in their emergency kits<\/a> to meet their needs until service can be restored.<\/p>\n

Store water: <\/strong>Use clean containers, preferably those designed for water storage. Do not use containers that might have previously stored hazardous or questionable materials, food with strong odors or are made of easily breakable materials such as glass. Fill the container with tap water, leaving minimal air space between the water and the cap. Store it in a cool, dark place.<\/p>\n

Water conservation requests:<\/strong> Typically issued to prevent a water storage tank from draining during a power outage. Customers during a conservation request are advised to limit water use to essential needs only, such as drinking, cooking and personal hygiene. Customers also should turn off plumbing fixtures that automatically draw water for the duration of a conservation notice.<\/p>\n

Do not drink advisory:<\/strong> Issued only if the water quality could be compromised. Customers are advised during this advisory to not consume tap water for any purpose until further notice. Tap water should not be consumed until Department of Water officially announces it is safe.<\/p>\n

Boil water notice or order:<\/strong> Boil all tap water RAPIDLY for about 3 minutes before you use it for drinking; brushing your teeth; making ice; washing your hands before eating; washing dishes, cooking surfaces, raw foods or rinsing food; and preparing other drinks such as baby bottles, Kool-Aid, tea, iced tea, shakes, frozen juices, etc. For more information, Click here<\/a> for additional information.<\/p>\n

If boiling water is not possible:<\/strong> U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommend using regular, unscented liquid household chlorine bleach and add 8 drops (1\/8 teaspoon) per gallon of clear water. Mix thoroughly and let stand at least 30 minutes before use. For cloudy water, use 16 drops (1\/4 teaspoon) per gallon. Do not use scented, color-safe or bleach products containing added cleaners.<\/p>\n
