The San Diego Wave\u2019s Seattle struggles continue.<\/p>\n
You can blame a native San Diegan for their latest loss.<\/p>\n
Cathedral Catholic High School graduate Maddie Mercado punched in a goal in Sunday\u2019s 29th minute, providing all the scoring the Seattle Reign would need on the way to a 1-0 win over the Wave in front of 9,904 fans at Lumen Field.<\/p>\n
The loss dropped the Wave (12-8-3) into a three-way tie for third place in the National Women\u2019s Soccer League standings; the top four teams host first-round playoff home game. By winning its second straight match, Seattle (10-8-6) moved into eighth place, good enough for the final playoff spot were the season to end today.<\/p>\n
Sunday\u2019s loss was the Wave\u2019s 15th in 16 all-time tries in Seattle. And Mercado\u2019s goal was her second in as many matches against her hometown team this season. After starring for the Dons, Mercado played collegiately at Notre Dame before Seattle took her in the second round of the 2024 NWSL draft.<\/p>\n
As if San Diego\u2019s poor history against the Reign wasn\u2019t bad enough, San Diego was forced to play one woman down for most of the match. Mimi Van Zanten was given a red card in the 13th minute, forcing the Wave to play the final 77 minutes with just 10 players. Despite that, the Wave managed to outshoot Seattle 13-9 while controlling possession for 59% of the time.<\/p>\n
