We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.<\/p>\n<p><strong class=\"sc-1uza6dc-1 eRQajs\">Your support makes all the difference.<\/strong>Read more<\/p>\n<p>As the hunt for the next James Bond reaches <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/news\/james-bond-contenders-jack-lowden-barton-callum-turner-b3041710.html\">its final stages<\/a>, the franchise\u2019s other cast members are unsure whether they\u2019re going to be in the next film.<\/p>\n<p>Since Daniel Craig\u2019s casting as the spy in 2006\u2019s Casino Royale, the series cast Ben Whishaw as Q, Naomie Harris as Miss Moneypenny and, after the death of Dame Judi Dench\u2019s M in Skyfall, Ralph Fiennes as the head of MI6.<\/p>\n<p>Another star who appeared in three of Craig\u2019s four Bond films was Rory Kinnear, who played M\u2019s chief of staff, Bill Tanner, in Quantum of Solace (2008) through to No Time to Die (2021). <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-06-at-14-21-56.png\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner in the 007 franchise\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner in the 007 franchise (Eon Productions)<\/p>\n<p>When asked if he had heard anything about the new iteration of the franchise, which is being spearheaded by Amazon, he said he hadn\u2019t, but is \u201csure\u201d that some of the old guard might be asked to return.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the exciting thing \u2013\u00a0I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll want to hold on to some continuity, what it means to people,\u201d Kinnear told <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/culture\/theatre-dance\/article\/rory-kinnear-on-acting-its-hiding-and-losing-yourself-that-i-find-captivating-3qq3b82z9\">The Times<\/a>. \u201cBut there\u2019ll be a whole different approach.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Other actors to have played Bill Tanner in old Bond films include Michael Goodliffe (The Man with the Golden Gun, 1974), James Villiers (For Your Eyes Only, 1981) and Michael Kitchen in GoldenEye (1995) and The World is Not Enough (1999).<\/p>\n<p>Kinnear, who said he would return if he got the call, also cast doubt over the current Bond casting rumours, which claim that Jacob Elordi, Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden and rising star Jack Barton (Heartstopper) are in final talks. Other contenders reportedly include Callum Turner and Harris Dickinson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThirteen years ago, The Telegraph announced me as the new Doctor Who \u2013 I don\u2019t know where that came from. It does tend to be people who aren\u2019t being talked about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/GettyImages-2200019576.jpeg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jack Lowden is reportedly in the mix to be the next James Bond\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 ggpMaE inline-gallery-btn\"\/>Jack Lowden is reportedly in the mix to be the next James Bond (Getty)<\/p>\n<p>Retired casting director Debbie McWilliams, who helped put Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig in the tuxedo over the years, told<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/arts-entertainment\/films\/features\/james-bond-who-new-actor-casting-debbie-mcwilliams-b3004775.html\"> The Independent in June<\/a> that \u201cit is absolutely essential that [Bond] retains a total enigma,\u201d adding: \u201cI don\u2019t want to see [Elordi, Turner, Dickinson et al] as Bond because we now know so much about them. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to know as little about them personally as possible, because that\u2019s what spies are. We don\u2019t need to know where he goes shopping or who his parents are, or where he lives \u2026 He\u2019s licensed to kill, and we have to believe that he can do that.
