CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa \u2014 A Chicago man was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison after authorities said he distributed fentanyl in Cedar Rapids that led to a man\u2019s fatal overdose.<\/p>\n
Vincent Steven Calvin, 66, pleaded guilty in March to distribution of a controlled substance and possession of ammunition by a felon. U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Calvin on Sept. 1 in Cedar Rapids to 144 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.<\/p>\n
According to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Northern District of Iowa, the fatal overdose happened after a man ingested fentanyl obtained from Calvin on Sept. 27 or 28, 2020. Authorities did not identify the man.<\/p>\n
Investigators made drug purchases from Calvin in November 2022 and January 2023, prosecutors said. During a January 2023 search of Calvin\u2019s Cedar Rapids apartment, officers found multiple rounds of ammunition. Calvin was prohibited from possessing ammunition because of multiple prior felony convictions.<\/p>\n
The Cedar Rapids Police Department investigated the case along with the Drug Enforcement Administration task force, which includes the Linn County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Marion Police Department and Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.
