Giuliani, who was mayor during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, also made broader claims about Muslims seeking to take over the United States and Europe.<\/p>\n\u201cThis is not, \u2018they want to be just another religion.\u2019 They want to dominate us. That\u2019s what they\u2019re taught from the day they begin their extremist religious education. Mamdani is a clear, a clear supporter of that,\u201d Giuliani said.<\/p>\n
Giuliani also compared Mamdani, who is Muslim and was 9 years old on Sept. 11, 2001, to the attackers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey weren\u2019t hiding it like Mamdani is trying to hide it. Bin Laden declared war on us. Bin Laden took credit for it,\u201d Giuliani said.<\/p>\n
Asked whether he had seen Giuliani\u2019s comments, Mamdani said he had nothing more to add.<\/p>\n
Other elected officials, however, strongly rebuked the former mayor.<\/p>\n
Gov. Kathy Hochul called Giuliani\u2019s comments \u201cwildly inappropriate,\u201d saying the 25th anniversary should be a time for New Yorkers to come together.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a moment in our time we should be united as a people,\u201d Hochul said. \u201cTwenty-five years of pain and sorrow for so many individuals and families. So many first responders, the firemen, doctors are still living at the trauma, and many times the illnesses. This is a time when people should be welcome to come together in our collective grief, memory, honoring those people, not trying to divide us. That\u2019s abhorrent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Attorney General Letitia James said Mamdani should be at the memorial.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe represents the city of New York and he will be there on 9\/11 and so will I,\u201d James said.<\/p>\n
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also defended Mamdani\u2019s attendance.<\/p>\n
\u201cMamdani is the mayor of New York City and of course he should be at 9\/11,\u201d Schumer said. \u201cAnd Giuliani, instead of being divisive, ought to bring people together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Giuliani was mayor during the attacks and was widely praised as a national hero in their aftermath. He attends the annual memorial event each year.<\/p>\n
But Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine said Giuliani\u2019s comments reflect how much his reputation has changed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think this says more about former Mayor Giuliani than it does about New Yorkers as a whole. And he\u2019s lost all credibility. He\u2019s had an incredible fall from grace,\u201d Levine said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe is not the national hero that he may have been in the days following 9\/11. And perhaps that\u2019s colored his approach to politics. Perhaps his resentment. I don\u2019t know what\u2019s driving him, but I don\u2019t think he has the credibility to make this demand. And I certainly hope that Mayor Mamdani won\u2019t listen to him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Public Advocate Jumaane Williams was even more direct.<\/p>\n
\u201cMayor Giuliani should have shut up a long time ago,\u201d Williams said.<\/p>\n
