{"id":105036,"date":"2025-07-30T14:38:14","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T14:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/105036\/"},"modified":"2025-07-30T14:38:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T14:38:14","slug":"how-younger-generations-are-budgeting-by-revenge-saving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/105036\/","title":{"rendered":"How younger generations are budgeting by &#8216;revenge saving&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DETROIT (WXYZ) \u2014 Revenge Saving is not just a trend; it&#8217;s becoming a way of life for some, and experts say it&#8217;s all a reaction to inflation and economic uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cms-textAlign-center\"><b>Watch the video report from Peter Maxwell below<\/b><\/p>\n<p>How younger generations are budgeting by &#8216;revenge saving&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753886293_418_\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-07-30 at 6.16.21\u202fAM.png\"  width=\"769\" height=\"485\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WXYZ<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just trying to save money, keep a little bit of money in the bank, so just in case something goes wrong, you have a little bit saved up,&#8221; said Tom Cassell.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753886293_404_\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-07-30 at 6.16.33\u202fAM.png\"  width=\"574\" height=\"520\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WXYZ<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I try to be a little frugile in good ways,&#8221; said Michael Bokos.<\/p>\n<p>Michael told me he no longer gets lunch on the town during the work week, instead opting to prepare meals at home in an effort to save money.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I try to every Sunday night go to Kroger and get chicken, beef, and vegetables,&#8221; Michael said. &#8220;I&#8217;ll make my own food and bring it into work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Michael and many others that I spoke with are now saving more of their paychecks rather than spending them, putting their finances first by doing what&#8217;s now being called &#8216;revenge saving&#8217;. It&#8217;s the latest trend in how younger generations are now prioritizing their savings, rather than spending.=<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753886294_964_\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-07-30 at 6.16.49\u202fAM.png\"  width=\"723\" height=\"472\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WXYZ<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just seeing the money leave my account and seeing how much the food adds up every single day and how much I can save by cooking at home and get groceries,&#8221; said Neveda Hicks-Brown.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the complete opposite of what many were doing post-pandemic, when people were eager to get out and spend money once the lockdowns were lifted.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753886294_429_\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-07-30 at 6.17.00\u202fAM.png\"  width=\"581\" height=\"482\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WXYZ<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;During the pandemic, we were at home and so we were spending more,&#8221; said Anthony Phillips.<\/p>\n<p>Revenge saving has become the latest trend among Milennials and Gen Z. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/global\/en\/issues\/work\/genz-millennial-survey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A recent Deloitte<\/a> survey shows 48 percent of Gen Z and 46 percent of Millenials do not feel financially secure.<\/p>\n<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/1753886294_404_\" alt=\"Screenshot 2025-07-30 at 6.17.29\u202fAM.png\"  width=\"822\" height=\"493\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WXYZ<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Revenge savings, is this emotional response to a very intellectually good thing. Which is to put money aside to make sure you have that rainy day fund,&#8221; said financial expert Bill Dendy.<\/p>\n<p>Economic challenges like inflation, tariffs, rising costs and financial instability are key factors pushing people to save.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People are responding emotionally very quickly to aggressively saving to cut down their budgets,&#8221; Bill said.<\/p>\n<p>While some people might be emotionally responding to this trend, others are just planning for future financial success.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Especially just getting out of college, I want to save as much as I can, get a house in a few years, live comfortably in a few years, but work hard now,&#8221; Michael said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"cms-textAlign-center\"><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wxyz.com\/news\/voices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Where Your Voice Matters<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Contact our newsroom <\/p>\n<p>Have a tip, story idea or comment on our coverage?
