(Courtesy of the Philadelphia 76ers and Flyers)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-prev swiper-button-prev swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"\/><a aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Team owners released rendered images Tuesday morning of what the arena will look like, as well as some new details. Here are 10 takeaways. <\/p>\n<p>Back to the Spectrum site<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new arena\u2019s future location is in South Philly\u2019s historic Spectrum grounds, not in Center City\u2019s Market East neighborhood, next to Chinatown, given the <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/01\/13\/no-arena-coalition-chinatown-celebration-community\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long and contentious<\/a> initial <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-sixers-arena-center-city-south-philly\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proposal to place it there<\/a>. That <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/series\/sixers-arena-philadelphia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$1.3 billion arena<\/a> plan had gotten final approval from Mayor Cherelle Parker and City Council, until Harris Blitzer Sports &amp; Entertainment (HBSE) <a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/philadelphia-sixers-arena-comcast-parker-south-philly\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced a partnership deal with Comcast Spectacor<\/a> to build the arena in South Philly instead \u2014 standing next to the Eagles\u2019 Lincoln Financial Field and the Phillies\u2019 Citizen\u2019s Bank Park and <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2026\/03\/19\/xfinity-mobile-arena-phil-laws-comcast-spectacor-behind-the-scenes-march-madness\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">replacing the Xfinity Mobile Arena.<\/a> The cost of the new arena project is still unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Fully privately-funded<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will be the largest fully privately funded project in Philadelphia\u2019s history, projected to create an estimated 15,000 jobs and generate nearly $6 billion in economic activity over the next 10 years. Tax revenue generated will also directly benefit the School District of Philadelphia.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Designer\u2019s global credentials<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arena is being designed by global firm <a href=\"https:\/\/populous.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Populous<\/a> and architects <a href=\"https:\/\/moodynolan.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Moody Nolan<\/a>. Some of the two firms\u2019 notable other projects include the <a href=\"https:\/\/populous.com\/showcases\/barclays-center-transformation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">transformation of the Barclays Center<\/a> in Brooklyn, future FIFA World Cup venue <a href=\"https:\/\/populous.com\/showcases\/prince-moulay-abdellah-stadium\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/moodynolan.com\/projects\/home-court-obama-presidential-center\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Obama Presidential Center\u2019s Home Court in Chicago<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/moodynolan.com\/projects\/lincoln-center-for-the-performing-arts\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Homage to the past<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The design pays homage to the old Spectrum Arena that was used by the Sixers and the Flyers from 1967 until 2009. The new arena reimagines that old look through a contemporary lens, updating to create an exterior \u201cdefined by stacked cantilevered bands that break down the scale of a typical arena and create a bold, instantly recognizable profile.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another set of steps<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The front will have a broad stairway, offering an entrance and gathering point that the team said will echo the Philadelphia Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p>The great outdoors<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will be over half an acre of outdoor space around the new arena, offering space for fan gatherings, activations, and food and beverage pavilions. The renderings also show a giant screen in front of the stadium.<\/p>\n<p>A team effort<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The partnership between HBSE, which owns the 76ers, and Comcast Spectacor, which owns the Flyers, also promised a <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/01\/13\/wnba-franchise-bid-philadelphia-comcast-sixers-new-south-philly-arena-deal\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">push for a WNBA expansion team<\/a>, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/06\/30\/at-last-philly-to-get-wnba-franchise-in-2030\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">awarded to Philly last June<\/a>. Comcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/philadelphia\/news\/philadelphia-wings-lacrosse-ending-operations\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced that it was folding the Philadelphia Wings, its box lacrosse team that also played in the current Xfinity Mobile Arena in March<\/a>, so as of now there will be three sports teams as permanent tenants in the new arena, <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2026\/03\/19\/xfinity-mobile-arena-phil-laws-comcast-spectacor-behind-the-scenes-march-madness\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">along with a calendar packed<\/a> with concerts, live entertainment and community programming.<\/p>\n<p>The countdown is on<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The target opening day for the new arena is ahead of the 2030 inaugural season of the new WNBA team, along with that year\u2019s NBA and NHL seasons.<\/p>\n<p>LeBron\u2019s legacy?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basketball fans hoping to see LeBron James as a Sixer will most likely only get to do it in the team\u2019s current home, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary last month. <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2026\/07\/24\/lebron-james-philadelphia-76ers-reactions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James just signed on for a two-year, $8 million contract with the team<\/a> after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers. All indications are the 41-year-old will retire as a Sixer, and probably well before 2030. If King James brings a long-awaited championship to Philly we can probably expect a <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2026\/08\/11\/lebron-james-philadelphia-street-art-murals\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statue or a mural on or near the arena<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s in a name?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comcast will own the naming rights of the new arena, which still has to be formally titled. Given the 30-year history of the currently-named Xfinity Mobile Arena, it will probably be named after a multibillion-dollar financial institution or corporation. During the name switch <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2025\/05\/06\/xfinity-mobile-arena-wells-fargo-center-rename-76ers-flyers-comcast-spectacor\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">from the Wells Fargo Arena to the Xfinity Mobile Arena<\/a>, we asked our readers for name suggestions that <a href=\"https:\/\/billypenn.com\/2024\/08\/06\/wells-fargo-rename-arena-ideas\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">paid homage to iconic Philly businesses, people and culture<\/a>. If Comcast decides to go with \u201cJawn Palace\u201d or the \u201cTastykake Thunderdome,\u201d we\u2019ll claim some credit.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li\/>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Love Philly?
