Beyond their <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/can-humanity-sustain-itself-without-destroying-the-earth-new-study-examines-ways-to-prevent-ecological-collapse\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ecological<\/a> importance, some <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/solving-this-london-mystery-led-to-the-discovery-of-a-new-species-almost-6000-miles-away\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">species<\/a> in this group are valued for producing omega-3 fatty acids like DHA, which is also found in oily fish, and carotenoids, pigments used in food coloring. <\/p>\n<p>This newly discovered species also contains roughly 50% protein, adding to its potential <a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/china-clears-brain-computer-interfaces-for-commercial-use-is-it-time-for-a-global-coalition\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commercial<\/a> value for applications such as food supplements, infant formula, and aquaculture.<\/p>\n<p><b>An \u201c<\/b><b>Alien<\/b><b>\u201d Reproductive Strategy<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of dividing into two, as we would expect, the mature cells develop a large internal chamber in which entirely new daughter cells grow,\u201d said Professor Peter Morris, a plant biologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hw.ac.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Heriot-Watt University<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of those daughters already have another developing generation inside them, before they are released when the mother cell breaks open,\u201d Morris added. \u201cSo, these microbes can be pregnant grandmothers, in the same way as some species of greenfly are born already pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers named the new species Caledochytrium aldermanii, drawing from Caledonia, the Latin name for Scotland, where it was discovered in three locations. The species name also recognizes Dr. David Alderman, whose early work culturing the microbe made the study possible.<\/p>\n<p>This discovery resulted from a long-term collaboration among Heriot-Watt University, its spinout company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strameno.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strameno<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cefas.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CEFAS Weymouth<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stir.ac.uk\/about\/faculties\/natural-sciences\/aquaculture\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Caught by Watching, Not Just Sequencing<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jane Polglase, who has spent nearly five decades studying Labyrinthulomycetes and co-founded Strameno with Alderman and Dr. Lydia Brown, helped document the microbe\u2019s unusual reproduction. The team relied on traditional observation and description, an approach less common in today\u2019s genomics-focused research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile lots of scientists now focus on the DNA of any creature, we\u2019ve taken an old-fashioned approach, also observing the microbe\u2019s behavior and describing its morphology fully,\u201d Polglase said. \u201cIf we had not done that, we never would have captured this peculiar reproductive process on camera.\u201d When the team finally caught it under an electron microscope, she said, \u201cWe couldn\u2019t believe what we were seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Resourceful Marine Recyclers<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Researchers found Caledochytrium in a variety of habitats, including octopus dens, on rainbow trout, and in a salt marsh along Scotland\u2019s east coast. The researchers believe it contributes to nutrient recycling by breaking down animal and plant material.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/thedebrief.org\/colossal-foundation-expands-its-ambitious-genetic-rescue-and-de-extinction-programs-to-save-endangered-species\/\" class=\"mask-img\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"120\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Matt-James-Colossal-Foundation-120x120.jpg\" class=\"attachment-codetipi-15zine-120-120 size-codetipi-15zine-120-120 wp-post-image lazyload\" alt=\"Colossal Foundation\"  data- style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 120px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 120\/120;\"\/>\t\t\t<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t&#13;<\/p>\n<p>An important part of this recycling process is the ectoplasmic net, a network of membranes the microbe creates to move around, feed, and stay buoyant. When it moves to a new surface, the microbe leaves the net behind, where marine larvae can feed on the leftover material, helping pass protein and lipids up the food chain.<\/p>\n<p><b>What Comes Next<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnderstanding how this species reproduces is key to understanding how it could be used in commercial settings, like aquaculture,\u201d Morris said.<\/p>\n<p>With this phase of research complete, the Heriot-Watt and Strameno team hopes others will continue the work.
