On Tuesday, the Arlington City Council voted unanimously in the first of two votes in favor of finalizing the city\u2019s 2027 fiscal year operating budget. <\/p>\n

The $786.2 million operating budget includes fewer cuts than last year, and according to the fiscal year 2027 proposed budget and business plan, this budget focuses on stability. <\/p>\n

Arlington city manager Trey Yelverton described last year\u2019s situation as hard. <\/p>\n

The property tax rate increased in fiscal year 2026 by 3 cents, which was expected to generate about $11.1 million in revenue for city services, according to previous Shorthorn reporting. <\/p>\n

Property taxes are one of the leading sources of revenue for the city. Yelverton said the city raised more money last year from property taxes than in previous years. But even though the proposed 2027 tax rate is equal to last year\u2019s, it is expected to generate less revenue. <\/p>\n

City property taxes for the average residential household will decrease by approximately $74.17 per year, according to the fiscal year 2027 proposed budget and business plan. <\/p>\n

One way the city is balancing the budget against the decreased revenue is by using growth in the Entertainment District to fund eligible services, according to the proposal. <\/p>\n

The proposed budget also includes adjustments to utility rates for the average residential household. Water rates will increase 6.37%, or approximately $61.20 per year, and garbage rates will increase 3.5%, or approximately $8.16 per year, according to the proposal. <\/p>\n

Storm water fees will remain unchanged. Overall, the average household in Arlington will see an annual decrease of $4.81, or around 40 cents less per month, for city services, according to the proposal. <\/p>\n

Since the hotel occupancy tax raised more money than expected last year, the proposal for 2027 would increase expected revenue by $195,000, allowing for the same increase in the expenditure budget. <\/p>\n

The second and final reading for the adoption of the 2027 fiscal year operating budget is scheduled for the Sept. 15 evening council meeting. <\/p>\n
