Martinez Fischer recommended in House District 116

Voters in Texas House District 116 — a strip of Bexar County that runs mostly west of Interstate 10 from near downtown San Antonio to north of La Cantera Parkway — have a proven choice in state Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer.

Martinez Fischer is finishing his 12th term in the Texas House or Representatives, and during that tenure, he has become more attuned to the political power levers in Austin while remaining intent on pulling them for the public’s good.

Martinez Fischer has been a dogged legislator, and he has plenty of fight left. While he has approached each legislative session with a clear understanding of the Texas House’s party makeup, he hasn’t let that deter him from standing up for his principles or building respectful relationships.

Martinez is right on multiple issues in Texas that cry out for change. He supports expanding Medicaid; properly funding public schools; providing reasonable and commonsense gun laws; and raising the long-stagnant minimum wage, believing that no one who works full time should live in poverty.

His legislative agenda also includes improving services for military veterans and children with disabilities.

At the same time, Martinez Fischer has a pragmatic side. He understands the need to work across the aisle — particular with other members representing parts of Bexar County — to get things done that benefit the larger constituency they all work for, and he is committed to fostering a productive working relationship with Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows.

While it is unlikely that Democrats will win a majority in the Texas House, the increasing disapproval of President Donald Trump will inevitably taint public trust in some Republican incumbents. And that could translate to a handful of seats flipping to Democratic challengers.

If that happens, the minority party will need experienced lawmakers such as Martinez Fischer, who has chaired the House Democratic Caucus and the Mexican American Legislative Caucus, to leverage the shift to stem the tide on bad policy or replace it with better options.

Voters in Texas House District 116 — a strip of Bexar County that runs mostly west of Interstate 10…

[5133
5229,7202,7203,358,3187,67,586,132,5230,68,2969
post-1053256","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-antonio","tag-america","tag-san-antonio","tag-sanantonio","tag-texas","tag-tx","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
